But what about Jake? He’ll be furious.

I lift my arm and check the time. I wanted to talk to him about everything, but he’s not home for another half an hour.

I’m starving. I pull on the handle of the refrigerator and check inside the sparse contents. A few leftover takeout containers, a half-empty carton of milk, and a wilting head of lettuce.

I groan and slam the door shut.

Hunger gnaws at my stomach, but it’s nothing compared to the turmoil swirling inside me.

Can I actually go through with Professor Baldwin’s proposition?

Would money solve my problems or come at a massive cost?

I’d be betraying Jake and compromising my own values. Not to say I’d be entering a precarious arrangement with two mysterious men.

I should have asked more about that.

Why didn’t I?

I groan.

As I pace around the apartment, my mind plays out various scenarios.

What if I accept the offer and everything goes wrong? They’re alphas. What if they decide to claim me and make me theirs forever?

What if it’s a trap? I escaped one trap when I was seventeen years old, then again when I escaped my stepfather, and it’s taken too long to get my life back on track.

But it’s five million dollars. It could change everything for me and Jake. If I say no, I might regret it forever.

I have to decide if five days with two alphas are worth it in order to guarantee the success of my sex toy empire.

Am I any better than my stepfather?

Selling myself to the highest bidder.

The weight of the decision presses upon me, crushing my chest until breathing becomes difficult. Only the sound of the front door opening breaks through my thoughts, and I freeze in place.

Jake steps into the apartment, his green eyes widening as he takes in my distraught expression. “What the hell happened?” he asks, rushing to my side.

“I... I don’t even know where to begin.” I stammer, fighting back tears. “I met with Professor Baldwin and we discussed his proposition.” I swallow as I stare into his eyes. “It’s insane, Jake. Absolutely insane.”

Jake’s brows furrow with interest as he wraps his arms around me, offering comfort amidst the chaos in my mind. “What did he say? Did he agree to your business idea?”

I shake my head, eyes wide as I whisper, “He changed the deal.”

Jake pulls back, holding my forearms as concern etches on his face. “Tell me everything,” he says softly, taking my hand and leading me over to the couch.

I take a deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts and stop my body from shaking. “He offered me five million dollars, but for at least five days with his pack, and that includes my first heat.”

“That might never happen,” Jake says.

“I know.” I sigh. I feel like such a dud. Most omegas have had multiple heats by twenty years old. Not the omegas in my family. I close my eyes. “And they want to share me. The professor and another alpha.” My cheeks burn in shame.

“Your heat?” He hesitates as he thinks about that. “But five million dollars.” His voice hushed. “Fuck, that’s a lot of money.”

I hate the way each time money is in the equation that Jake seems to forget what it means for me for that money to land in my bank account.

All of a sudden, he shakes his head, studying my face intently. “You don’t have to do anything that makes you uncomfortable. You’ve been through enough already.”
