He laughs. “You’re scared you’re going to lose her to a pack.”

I shake my head. He doesn’t know I’m acting vulnerable to hide what I really want.

“Be honest with me, Jake. You never know what the answer might be if you are. I like you. You’re a good man.”

I smile. “I feel like I’m losing her already. She’s slipping away, and I can’t bear the thought of losing her completely. If this is the only way...”

The professor studies me, his gaze piercing through the walls I’ve built around myself. “You love her,” he says softly, almost as if it’s a revelation to himself.

I nod, unable to find the words to express the depth of my feelings for Ella. It goes beyond our designations. It’s deeper than scent matching and physical attraction. And yet, it scares me to my core.

She scares me.

“I understand,” he murmurs as he glances out of the window. “Love can make us do things we never thought possible.”

I nod.

The silence between us hangs heavy, and the professor seems lost in his own thoughts before finally breaking the stillness. “If you’re willing to enter our pack and share Ella with me and my pack mate,” he begins cautiously, “then you only need to persuade her that this pack is right for her.”

“I can do that, but first I want you to put half the money in her bank account.”

He laughs and shakes his head. “I want that guarantee from Ella, not you. I want to shake her hand on the deal. She’s the one making the agreement, not you. She’s the omega.”

I stare out of his window at the large trees that surround the grounds. Their branches sway in the light breeze.

“I understand,” I finally say, my voice steady despite the nervousness that churns within me. “I’ll talk to Ella and make her see the potential this pack holds for her.”

The professor nods appreciatively, a triumphant glint in his eyes. “Good. And remember, Jake, you must be patient. Now you’ve chosen this path, you’re accepting you’re also giving us the omega you love.”

Temporarily.

I don’t say it out loud.

Once Ella and I get his five million dollars, we’re out of here. I can see it in his eyes, he thinks Ella will be theirs for more than five nights.

She’s not.

Long term, she’s only mine.

I have a plan.

I have to be patient to get what I want.

Patient. The word reverberates in my mind, a constant reminder that this will require time and delicate handling.

I stand and hold out my hand. “I’ll do whatever it takes to convince Ella that this pack is the right choice for her.”

He smiles, pleased with my response.

“Good,” he says, shaking my hand. “But remember, Jake, this isn’t just about persuasion. It’s about showing our omega that we can provide her with the love and support she deserves. We must prove ourselves to be a pack unlike any other.”

“Love? I thought you only wanted five nights?“ I question.

“The five nights is to make her realize she wants us,” he replies, making my stomach churn at his honesty. “But with you on board…”

I swallow hard when he stops talking, struggling to keep my emotions in check. This man doesn’t know what love truly means. To him, it’s simply something to be bought. But for me, it’s everything.

“I understand,” I lie through gritted teeth.
