“Exactly. This toy might ease me into taking the real thing.”

“Ah. I never thought of how it could help alphas,” I say. This toy is getting better and better.

“I saw Jake earlier. Is he still studying and working?” Harlow asks, taking the conversation back to my live-in alpha. I nod. “It must be hard on him.”

“Yeah. I feel guilty because the little I earn at the sports bar in the town only just covers our food and half the bills. He covers the rent and everything else. But he refuses to let me take on more hours.”

“That’s very alpha-like. Are you sure he doesn’t see you as his?” Bardot asks.

I smile. “Like I’ve just said. I love Jake, but we’ve been best friends for years, and I don’t think that’ll change.”

“She doesn’t see what we all see,” Sienna says. “He loves you.”

I laugh. “He loves me the same way he does you. As a friend.”

“Absolutely.” Sienna nods, grinning.

I need to get this conversation away from Jake and back to the business at hand. “So you’ll test it?”

“Of course, I mean, we can’t let the omegas have all the fun, can we?” Sienna smirks, her eyes gleaming with mischief.

“I wouldn’t want that.” I agree.

My eyes flick to the door and I smile when Jake swaggers into the bar. His dark blonde hair flops over his eyes. Beautiful green eyes that make me jealous, but eyes that are often on me.

He isn’t as hard looking as other alphas, yes his face is angled and sharp, but he has a sweet look.

Sienna looks up, a dreamy look in her eyes as we both watch Jake approach. “He’s definitely handsome,” she says, her tone teasing. “But don’t worry, I won’t tell him how you feel.”

I laugh. “I told you, we’re just friends.”

Her eyebrows wiggle. “I think you protest too much.”

“Don’t say anything,” I mumble, unable to look away from Jake’s tall form as he approaches our table. “I admit we’re complicated.”

I can’t tell her everything about my life or what Jake saved me from the day I ran away and had to leave my sisters with that man.

“Then, un-complicate it,” Sienna adds, her eyebrows furrowing in concern.

Jake joins us at the table. Plants a tender kiss on my cheek before his eyes light up at seeing the toy in front of Sienna.

She gives him her biggest smile. “I know a few people who are influencers, so I’ll do what I can to help.”

Jake looks between us. “That’s brilliant news.”

“That’s because Sienna is a genius,” I say.

Sienna smirks. “You invented it. I’m just going to have the thrill of using it.”

Chapter 2

Ella

Jake takes my hand as we walk across the road to his car. His thumb strokes over the scar on the inside of my wrist, soothing me as he always does.

“We need to talk somewhere private,” he says as he opens the door of his car and I sink into the passenger seat.

I wait for him to get into the car. “Why? What’s going on?” My heart sinks a little, hoping he won’t say we have to move on.
