It only takes fifteen minutes to get to Walker and Gabe’s beach side home. My anxiety lifts as the gates to the home open as we near them.

The clang of the metal gates shuts, and my breathing regulates. Only then do I realize how quick my raspy breaths were during the journey.

“I’ll park in the garage. You go inside.” Jake pulls up outside the door. I get out and rush to get into the house.

Once inside, my heart rate finally slows.

I head to the sound of Walker and Gabe talking in the office on the left.

Gabe has his back to me, and Walker must be seated at his desk, working.

“When do we tell her the truth about what happened?” Gabe asks Walker, making my ears prick and my footsteps falter.

“Not yet.” Walker shuffles some papers on his desk. “I’ve transferred the final fifty percent of the money into her bank account. Our side of the deal is done. Now we have to convince her we are her alphas, and this is her pack.”

“You’re strange for an alpha. Most alphas just take,” Gabe says.

“You don’t have to take when you find your scent match. She doesn’t know it yet.”

But I do.

“We know the vaccination her stepfather gave her when she was eighteen has worn off, otherwise she would never have gone into her heat. I don’t know if it’s still affecting her senses. But I know when it stops, she will smell me as I smell her.”

“But how do you know that?” Gabe’s tone is one of surprise. “That she’s a scent match.”

“I just do. She told me something once when she was younger. About how delicious I smelled that day, and she told me my cologne was like warm croissants with a smothering of butter and sweet berries.”

“I think she smells like a sweet Danish pastry with a vanilla custard,” Gabe says.

“Very similar,” Walker replies.

I slam my hand on my chest and hold back my gasp, trying to remember all the times those smells were around, but I thought it was the actual food.

“I think you should hold back on telling her about your involvement until her senses are fully back. If she smells you as her scent match she’ll find a way to forgive you.”

The internal door opens and I spin and see Jake up ahead. I rush my index finger over my mouth, not wanting him to slam the door shut.

“You’re convinced she’ll forgive me,” Gabe says, resting his hand on the wall and glancing at the ceiling.

“You’re not at fault.”

“I fucking was.”

“Your pack was,” Walker grunts. “If it wasn’t for you, who knows what would’ve happened to Ella or her sister?”

My eyes widen as I take in the conversation. A hitched breath escapes my lips as I listen to the hushed tones of the two men.

Gabe blows out a breath. “I want her but I just don’t feel worthy of her. I don’t deserve her.”

The pounding of my heart thuds in my ears as Jake slides beside me. My eyes widen as the weight of their words settles in my brain, and a heaviness pulls at my chest.

“You need to get over it. You saved hers and her sister’s life the day you called me.”

A gasp catches in my throat, the sound muffled as I clamp my hand over my mouth.

Their voices blur together until they become a buzzing hum in my ears, and I struggle to make sense of their words. Each sentence is a punch to the gut, knocking the air out of me. My mind races, trying to process everything I’m hearing.

I stand there, frozen in shock, thinking about everything he told Walker, and realizing his former pack was to blame for my kidnapping.
