I’m tense, like a taut wire ready to snap.

And then I hear, “But not her father’s.”

Chapter 21

Gabe

Her scream penetrates the air right before her fists rein down on my back.

I stagger forward, taken aback by her sudden attack.

Turning to see her. The rage in her eyes is unmistakable as she stops and glares at me before she charges toward me again.

“You killed my father.” Her voice is like nothing I’ve ever heard before.

High.

Damaged.

And fueled by a thirst for revenge.

I brace myself for the impact as she lunges at me, making her small hands into tight fists.

I don’t dodge her strikes. I let her hit me with as much force as she wants... needs.

Jake tries to reason with her, wrapping his arms around her waist, holding her back.

“Let her go,” I say.

“Gabriel. What are you doing?” Walker asks.

“I deserve everything she gives me.” I know the truth about her father’s death. And the pain and anger in her eyes tells me that words will not sway her now. “She needs this.”

“She needs to hear the truth,” Walker says.

Before I can even open my mouth to respond, she launches herself at me with a fierce battle cry. Her eyes overflow with tears of agony, but seeing the fire in my sweet’s eyes reflects the turmoil I feel.

She screams with each strike she delivers. Each hit harder than the last. Her strength is far beyond anything I could have imagined, each strike forcing me to retreat. But I refuse to stop her.

“Eleanor Darling, stop now.” Walker takes a step closer, his tone full of concern. “Eleanor... this is enough,” he says firmly.

She doesn’t stop. She hisses like a cat caught in an alley.

Despite the ache in my chest, I take all her blows, my body contorted in sorrow but not in pain. Just the fact that she will never forgive me is enough to torment me.

I knew my omega would never accept this news, and it’s the failure I expected, even though I secretly hoped she would forgive me somehow.

I laugh at my own stupidity.

Not that it helps.

“You’re laughing at me.” The rage in her eyes is still fierce as her fists hit me one, two on my chest. “You killed my dad, and now you’re laughing at me.” Her voice is as weak as her body, but she doesn’t stop.

“I’m not laughing at you,” I say, taking another blow to my chest. “I’m laughing at myself. That I thought...” I shake my head, resigned. No words will solve the problem. “It doesn’t matter.”

“Eleanor Darling... stop!”

“No.”
