Page 76 of Knot so Sweet

Jake groans and I can feel his knot deflating. “He saved yours and Ava’s lives.”

“But...”

“No. Your dad died going back into the warehouse to kill the kidnapper. You were all safe until that point.”

Anger simmers under the surface as I realize Jake is trying to stick up for Gabe. “Are you blaming my dad?”

“No.” He groans out.

“It sounds like you are to me,” I hiss.

“I’m trying to tell you what happened.”

“You’re trying to make me choose this pack, Jake, when Gabe…” I exhale, squirming underneath him. “I need some space.”

“Wait for my knot to fully deflate or you’ll hurt both of us.” Jake’s grip on my hands tightens, and he presses his hips against mine, locking me in place. “You need to know the truth.”

The two of us lay there in a tangle of limbs, still sweaty from our embrace, and our heartbeats pounding in sync.

I stare up at the ceiling, trying to find some kind of peace within myself, but his words keep circling my mind.

You need to know the truth.

“Tell me.”

The tension in his body easing up—but mine is building.

He sighs. “You need to know Gabe didn’t know his pack had even hired someone to take Ava.”

Ava?

“Ava? What do you mean? His pack wanted Ava?” My words come out so quiet they are barely audible.

Jake’s white teeth dig into his lip and I know he is about to lie to me.

“Tell me the truth.”

He swallows before his eyes turn away.

I choke back a sob. I’m such a fucking idiot that I thought we were both stolen to order, but as usual, my prettier sister was the omega who was wanted.

But why was I there?

“And me” The kidnapper hid his face, but I could make out his crooked nose and I’ll never forget his putrid smell. The smokey ash, and the bitter chocolate with hints of mint. The saltiness that covered his skin.

Nothing blended.

Nothing made my stomach do anything but churn.

Jake sighs, still looking away. “Sorry,” he murmurs. “He...”

I glance at my wrists and remember the kidnapper’s dark, murderous gaze as he looked into my eyes. “He was supposed to kill me,” I stutter as tears sting my eyes.

And Jake doesn’t deny it.
