I pour two fingers of rich, amber-colored bourbon into a heavy crystal glass. The liquid swirls and settles, giving off a heady scent of oak and caramel.

With the glass in my hand, I stroll towards the French doors that open up to the serene ocean view. The water glistens under the moon’s soft glow, and the gentle rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the shore fills the air, creating a peaceful atmosphere which is the opposite of how I’m feeling.

With a gentle push, I swing open the large double doors, inviting the salty ocean air to sweep into the house. Then I step outside onto the cool stone patio and settle into a comfortable chair, letting the warm night air wash over my skin.

Ella’s smell fills my senses, reminding me she’s still here. I’m not sure if tomorrow will be the same.

I take a sip of my bourbon, letting the heat roll down my throat as I close my eyes and take a deep breath.

I’m just steps away from the endless expanse of the sparkling blue ocean. I should feel at peace in this oasis, but there’s nothing but fear racing through me right now.

Her perfume coats my skin and I know she’s close by. It’s the perfect blend of sweet but buttery pastry filled with the perfect amount of tangy berries and a dash of vanilla cream.

I turn on my heels as I search for her. Only then do I hear the inaudible sound of someone talking, but not enough to hear the words over the crashing waves.

I glance to my right and see Ella. She’s barefoot and flicking sand with her toes as she strolls. She’s only wearing a pair of pajamas, her hair pulled into a high bun.

As she mutters to herself, she wipes the back of her hand over her tired eyes.

She stops and turns to the sea and wraps her arms around her body as she stares into the distance.

After placing the glass on the table, I rush to her. “Ella, baby. Are you okay?”

“Walker,” she sobs as I get closer to her. “They never wanted me...” Her eyes are watery and her body shivers as she tries to hold herself together, and that’s what gets me.

“I don’t understand.”

“Gabe’s pack never wanted me. They wanted Ava.”

I already know everything and take her hand to lead her back to the house.

“I’m an omega and they didn’t want me.” Her tone is full of disbelief.

I suppose it’s hard for an omega to understand that not all alphas will fall at their feet.

Her eyes are glazed over with a watery haze as I gather her into my arms.

“Oh, baby.”

Tremors wrack her body as I hold her close. My heart breaks hearing her sobs. Her tears are like a dam breaking, years of pent-up fear and anguish pouring out of her in torrents.

“I want you,” I say as she smothers her face into my bare chest.

Her perfume is leaking out of her as quickly as her fear. I stroke her hair as I cast a wary glance around us, hoping nobody can smell her.

“But Gabe...”

Fuck. She is still worried about Gabe. Why the hell didn’t he trust me to tell her?

“Gabe doesn’t want to hurt you. I promise.”

Ella looks up at me, her eyes wide with hope but also with a flicker of uncertainty. “I need to go home and think about...”

“You’re not going anywhere, Ella.” I pull her into a tight embrace, feeling her tremble against me. “You’re staying here with me.”

“Walker. I need some space.” Her eyes flash around my face as she shakes her head.

“You’re mine to protect. You’re my omega.”
