I shiver.

“She’s alive,” I murmur, holding back my tears. “But she’s on the run.” I know if she ran out on a billionaire, he’ll have the resources to find her. “What else do you know?”

Jake shakes his head as he takes my hand and leads me back to the car. “The USB is for you only. Apparently there’s a password on the account, only you’ll be able to work it out. But we can’t talk about her until we’re away from the car again.”

It must be my sister.

“Do you think your car is bugged?” I ask.

“I don’t know. I’ve started feeling weird about being here. We need to consider the possibility we’ll have to move on again.”

“I like it here,” I whisper.

He takes my hand, stroking his fingers over my palm. “Me too. But until you have a pack... a bonded alpha. Your stepfather won’t stop trying to find you. At least if you’re bonded, it’s too late.”

I laugh as I wrap my fingers around his hand. “Earlier, I… I thought you were going to ask me to be yours.” My voice is laced with playfulness, but also with a touch of disappointment. The idea of being bonded to Jake, of solidifying our connection in such a profound way, had crossed my mind more times than I cared to admit.

But is he my alpha?

“You’ll always be mine.”

“Your friend?” I confirm.

Jake chuckles, his eyes twinkling with a mischievous glint. “You’re my best friend. But you might be my omega too. I feel it, but you have to let yourself go.”

“I’m too scared,” I say.

“I know that, but I’ll look after you.”

I smile. “I know you will, but I’m scared to know the truth...” I swallow, about to tell him how I feel for the first time. “Finding out I’m your omega would be a dream come true.”

“Would it?” His voice breaks a little.

“But finding out I’m not...” I hesitate. “That would break me.”

“I’m your alpha, Eleanor Darling. Scent match or not.”

I gasp. Jake has never been so insistent about me. “Really?”

“I’ve waited for you to accept we’re more than friends.” He smiles. “I’m your alpha the moment you accept me.”

“Jake...”

“I brought you here to protect you,” he says, his voice gravelly, the sound making my body tingle and my heart skip a beat. “But I also brought you here because you’re mine.”

Chapter 3

Ella

“Yours.” I repeat the one word I’ve wanted to hear from Jake since the day I met him. “I like the sound of that.”

“Do you?” He cups my face, and I’m hoping he’s going to pull me close to him and kiss me.

Do it.

But Jake pulls away slightly, a mischievous smile playing on his lips. “Well, then,” he says, his tone low and husky. “If you truly like the sound of it, I suppose I’ll have to put it to the test.”

I study him with a questioning look. Before I can even ask what he means, he says, “Come off your medication.”
