I’ve checked every drawer in the room. I’ve checked out the bathroom. It’s small enough to house a toilet, a sink, and a shower to freshen up. There’s even a stack of shower gels, shampoos, and other toiletries in a small cupboard.

Maybe in an hour, I’ll freshen up.

I sit with my back against the wall and open my purse, desperate to know Jake is fine.

I press on his name and wait to connect.

“Ella. How are you?”

“Me?” I’m not the one driving around the town with a lunatic on the tail of my car. “I’m fine. I’m locked in the panic room. I wish I had brought some books with me.”

“Have you not got anything on your cell?” he asks, like we’re in our apartment and having a chat.

I ignore him and ask, “Did Gabe call you?”

“Yeah. But believe it or not, I’m driving around the town, and I’ve not set sight on the car again. I even drove past the apartment to check the car wasn’t waiting outside.”

I exhale, the relief releasing from me is like a balloon being let go at the end and fluttering around the room until there is no air left.

“You okay?”

“Yeah. I’m just surprised.” I push myself off the bed and hit the button to turn on the camera and wait for a picture on the screen. “Did you tell Gabe?”

“Yeah. He asked me to keep driving around because Walker won’t be home for fifteen minutes anyway, but there’s still no sign.”

There’s a remote control underneath the display for the house cameras. I grab it and flick through the different screens.

“Do you think he gave up?” I ask.

“For now.” He clears his throat. “But you know we’re going to have to move out of the apartment and stay with Walker and Gabe for a while.”

“I sup—“ I stare at the screen ahead.

My heart feels like it stops at that moment.

“What’s wrong?” he asks.

I watch as Gabe sits on a chair in the office, his eyes wide as the man in front of him points a gun at his face. The gunman is sitting on the chair opposite him.

“He’s ...”

“Ella!” Jake yells. “Tell me what is wrong.”

“Call Walker now. He’s here, and he has a gun pointing at Gabe.” Each word rushes from my mouth.

As I’m flipping through the screens, I hear Jake’s voice on the other end of the line, yelling at me to stay in the panic room. I try to explain to him what I’m seeing, but he’s not listening. He’s too focused on trying to keep me safe.

“Do not leave that panic room.” Jake’s voice is deep as he warns me again. “I’m going to call Walker. I’ll have to disconnect.”

“Yeah.” Walker will know what to do.

I take a shaky step back and sit on the bed. My heart racing as I try to process the information I’ve just seen. I glance at the screen again.

In the office, a man points a gun at Gabe.

I turn up the volume.

“Where is she?” His menacing voice hisses as he shakes his gun.
