I rise from the bed and walk to the door. After picking up the key card, I click on the scanner. The door clicks as I turn back to Ella. “You made the right choice coming here. You’re safe here.”

“I know,” she whispers. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, my sweet.” I cough. I try so hard not to call her the name. I know I have no right to call her. She’s not mine and never will be. “Now, let me get out of here and call your alphas.”

Ella’s teeth dig into her lip as she nods lightly. “Are you my alpha?” she asks, her voice shaking.

I stand with my hand on the door, not looking at her. I can’t. “No.” I don’t deserve you.

“Oh.”

The door clangs behind me, and I stand with my back against it as my heart thuds wildly against my rib cage. Her sweet scent coats my soul, but I can’t do anything about it.

Not anymore.

I make my way down the hallway, my footsteps slow and deliberate, as I take my cell from my pocket.

Finding Walker in my contacts, I send him a quick message telling him Ella is at the house and safe.

My cell pings as I make my way to the office. My footsteps are heavy on the Italian marble tiles.

Walker: I’ll be home in fifteen minutes and we’ll set the plan in action. Call Jake and let him know I’ll call him when we’re ready for him to return to the house.

We’re going to lure her kidnapper back to the house, and then we’ll dispose of him.

I reach the office and turn around, scanning the area outside the house for a moment. I walk into the office and sit behind the desk.

Flicking my cell over in my palm as I try to calm my nerves. I still feel responsible for bringing danger to Ella’s life. An everlasting feeling I cannot see fading.

I find Jake’s number on my phone and call. He answers within two rings.

“Hi,” he says. His voice is not becoming of someone on a wild chase.

“How are you?”

“Fine, I’m driving around and think I’ve shaken the car off when I was driving through the town. I haven’t seen it since.”

Fuck!

I wanted to get this over with.

I blow out a deep breath. “Okay. Walker is on his way back to the house. He’ll be fifteen minutes. If you keep driving around the main roads, hopefully you can pick the car up again.”

“I can do that,” Jake says. “And then what do I do?”

“Give yourself enough time for Walker to get back to the house. And then we’ll lure the man to his demise.”

“No problem,” Jake says. But just as I hang up on Jake, the sound of footsteps come from the front of the house, and I know the man is here.

I grab my gun and creep to the doors, waiting.

“Are you looking for me?” a voice comes from behind me.
