He lets out a deep, exasperated sigh. “I wanted to, but...” He shakes his head. “She needs her alphas. She needs her pack.”

My feet sink into the sand with each step, but at least it’s silent as we get closer to the house.

“And you?”

He shoots me a narrowed gaze. “I’m not important. She is. But she chose me.”

“I know she did,” I say. An omega choosing her alphas is a strange concept in this world, but I want my omega to have more rights than other omegas have. “But you haven’t claimed her yet, have you?”

He shakes his head.

I look forward. We’re only one hundred meters from the house. I turn back to him.

“I need to tell her I’m fine with you and Gabe. I think she is waiting for my permission,” he says.

“Gabe too?”

“She didn’t worry about going to him at the beach. So she doesn’t fear him,” Jake says. “I think she needs to hear his story and hopefully she’ll forgive him for his past choices.”

The waves crash against the shore, drowning our voices.

We push forward. I slam my hand on Jake’s chest and push him backward, stopping him in his stride as I watch a black figure against the tree that leads from the beach to my home. I press my finger over my lips and point at the figure. A red glow of a cigarette floats in the air.

“There’s more than one, or do you think he killed Gabe?” Jake asks, his voice barely above a whisper. “I hope Ella stayed in the panic room.”

I push him back, my heart racing when the figure in the distance throws the cigarette on the ground, and moves towards the house.

We creep toward the house, keeping my eyes on the shadowy figure.

Reaching the perimeter wall, we crouch low and watch for a moment. “Fuck, there’s more than one.” I point to two men chatting at the French doors to the house.

“What are we going to do?” Jake’s breathing is heavy, and his eyes are wide with fear. I get it. He’s young and his omega is inside the house.

Taking out my cell, I check my access to the security system has cleared. “I need to find out how many men are here, but—“

“What’s the problem?” Jake asks.

“I tried to access the security system earlier, but I’m locked out.”

Jake takes my cell and opens an app and enters his details. “Put your password in.”

He hands me back my cell.

“I tried earlier, and it wouldn’t accept it. Do you think I was hacked?”

“I don’t know for sure, but you’re logged on again now.” Jake shrugs as he watches the men separate and walk to opposite sides of the house. “But what’s the likelihood of it being a coincidence?”

Once into the security system, we count three men outside and we know one is inside, from what Ella told Jake.

“We’ll deal with him first,” I point to the man closest.

Jake nods and his eyes widen when I push a silencer over the end of my gun. He shows me his gun. I shake my head. “You only shoot in an emergency. We need to stay silent.”

Our footsteps are light as we creep towards the tree at the perimeter of the house. “Stay here and cover my back.”

Jake crouches down and points his gun at the black figure at the end of the house.

With each step I take, I’m glad the weather is causing the waves to crash harder, and sound louder than normal. When I reach the edge of the pool, I crouch low and aim, hoping he’ll turn, and I can make the perfect hit.
