I’m military trained. I know I won’t miss him. But I want to take my first hit before the man waiting at the other side of the house has the time to realize. That way, I can take two out without the man inside, and the men at the front of the house having an idea we’re here.

He turns.

It’s like he knows I’m about to kill him. I’m sure I see more of the white of his eyes as he stares ahead.

I squeeze the trigger.

The whites of his eyes vanish as he slumps to the floor.

I wait to find the right time to make it to the opposite side of the pool to take out the other man. But in a serendipitous moment, the other shadowy figure rushes to what I know is his pack mate. The whine that leaves his throat telling me he was also his lover.

It’s time to put you out of your misery.

I pull the trigger and send him to the same place as his mate.

A soft cry comes from the house.

I turn to Jake, curl my finger, and he rushes to me.

“Check the cameras in the house. I’m sure I heard Ella.”

“She’s in the panic room,” Jake says. His fingers fumble over the settings in the app as he searches through the cameras for her. “Fuck! She’s in the office.”

He shows me the image of Ella wearing her pajamas and gown. A hand wrapped in her hair and a gun pointing at her head.

“Follow me,” I grunt under my breath.

Chapter 30

Ella

My mind is racing, wondering if I can remove the gun from my gown pocket. And then will I be calm enough to aim and kill before he gets the chance to realize what is happening?

Just as I’m about to try to discreetly slip my hand in my pocket, an earsplitting twang echoes, the sound reverberating off the walls and causing my ears to ring.

My senses are alert. I smell copper first, then feel a wetness coating my hair and back. Right before I hear the sharp intake of breath from the man behind me.

I don’t know what’s going on.

I’m falling to the ground.

Everything moves in slow motion.

A dull thud follows as the man behind me hits the ground, and another as I hit the floor, too.

Then everything races.

“Ella!” Gabe yells. My head spins from the impact and I scramble away from the blood that is coating the ground around my feet.

Gabe’s captor pulls the chair Gabe is tied to away from the window. His own back against the wall as he points his gun at me, saying, “Stand over there.”

He lowers his forehead as he nods to the chair on the far wall.

I press my hands on the floor and take a deep breath as I lift onto my knees and then scramble to the chair. My stomach churns when I see the lifeless body of the man who caught me, before I glance out of the window.

Walker is here. He’s going to save us.

“You’re very expressive. Yes, obviously he was killed by one of your alphas. But don’t worry, your alphas will soon be dead.” He smirks at me. “Just like you will be.”
