What the hell?

I saved your life.

His nostrils flare, his eyes steely gray, his dark hair ruffled, but it’s his scent that infiltrates every molecule of air around me that has me weakened. “He could’ve killed you, my sweet.”

The sound that comes from Gabe makes me shiver.

I glance at the dead man sprawled on the floor.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper. “I saw you on the camera. I didn’t know there were any more men. I should have checked. I just...” I swallow. “I thought he was going to kill you.”

“And you didn’t want that?”

Before I get the chance to answer, Walker and Jake come running into the room, guns pointing ahead. “Are you two okay?”

I nod as I stare at Gabe.

“She saved my life,” Gabe says. “But can you get this rope off my neck?”

Walker smiles as he walks to Gabe, and Jake rushes to me, holding me. “Are you okay? You’re not hurt?”

“I don’t think so.” I swallow.

Walker holds me next, pulling into his hard body and purring over my head, trying to soothe me. “Let Gabe take care of you while we take care of the bodies. Would you do that for this pack?”

I nod.

Walker walks me to Gabe. He wraps his arms around me. “She’ll need time to relax. We’ll give you both some time together.”

He leaves me in Gabe’s arms and he and Jake leave to clean the house.

“I’m sorry for leaving the panic room. I just thought...” I say to Gabe.

His hand strokes over my hair and my fingertips glance over at the scars on my wrist. “My sweet brave girl.”

I’m not sure I’m ready to hear his endearing words.

Gabe groans as I turn from him and walk to the man who took me from the panic room. I drag the mask over his head and reveal his face. My breath catches in my throat. “It’s my kidnapper.”

“It’s over now,” Gabe says with a sigh. “And it’s time for me to let you be.”

“Not yet.” I swallow the lump in my throat. “I’m sorry for not letting you tell me your story yourself. I’m ready to listen.”

Gabe shakes his head. “Never apologize for protecting your heart. I understand that.”

“But I should have let you explain. I … I came out of the panic room because I was scared my m…” I stammer.

“Your mate,” he answers, not breaking my stare.

I nod and my nostrils twitch as his scent paints the air. The delicate smell of the perfect pastry. I know Walker is the sweet fruit that sits on the top, and my gorgeous Jake is the essence that brings it all together. His vanilla scent completes my three alphas … my pack.

Only since my heat has my sense of smell fully come back in a way I know how it works. They each have an individual smell which is delicious, but together they smell out of this world.

“And I could have lost you forever because I only heard what I wanted to hear. And...” I choke.

Gabe doesn’t break his stare. Waiting.

My mate.
