“I don’t know. We’re still figuring that stuff out.”

“I don’t care if you’re still figuring it out. I want to see this man and properly investigate. He’s not allowed to break your heart again.”

“I’ll see when we can get together,” I promised. “But I’ve got to call Vicky too, before she kills me.”

“Sara’s going to want a call too.”

I shrugged, even though she couldn’t see it. Sara had been the one who had really taken up arms against Ashton after everything blew up, and it had honestly put a bit of a wedge between us. I couldn’t stand listening to her trash him while my heart still fucking beat for him, despite how angry I was. Now? She’d probably want to skin me for giving him another chance.

“I’ll wait on Sara until I have more answers,” was all I said.

“She’s not going to be happy about it.”

“She’ll get over it. Besides, she and Greg are busy with themselves. If you keep your lips closed about it, she’ll never even know.”

Yes, Sara and the guy she met at the bar with caterpillar mustache man were still together. Their one night stand had turned into a weekend, then a trip to the Utah mountains, and they’ve been together ever since. It had stunned us all.

“Fine, but I'm not going to take the heat when she finds out. Plus, Vicky will likely say something because the girl thrives on chaos.”

She wasn't wrong.

My number got called right then.

“Gotta go. My food's ready.”

“Fine. Be like that. You go on, feed and fuck your soldier boy while your girl is here all alone and waiting for you to spill the tea.”

I laughed.

“I'll talk to Ash about a dinner with the girls. In the meantime, mind your own beeswax.”

She huffed as I went to the counter and got my food, then hurried out to the car again.

“Fine. Love you girl!”

“Love you, too,” I blurted, then hung up.

Suddenly, I was so freaking anxious to get home to Ash that it made my stomach hurt.

Or maybe I was just really hungry.

The drive home took forever, but it gave me time to think. The restless need to be near him was both exciting and terrifying. Things between us were way too new to feel this kind of separation anxiety, right? I mean, we hadn't spent longer apart than the time it took to poop, with the single exception of my half day of work on Monday. We'd been literally inseparable.

By the time I made it to my front door, I had basically convinced myself that Ashton would be gone when I opened that door.

My front door swung open and banged into the wall behind it. Heavy footsteps pounded from my bedroom and Ashton quickly appeared half naked, clad in nothing but a bitty pair of boxer briefs.

“Holy shit,” he panted, planting both hands against the hallway walls on each side of him. “I thought someone was breaking in!”

I let out my own sigh of relief.

He's still here.

“Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you,” I blurted out.

He waved his hand, dismissing my apology as his eyes landed on our dinner, still in a delicious smelling paper bag in my hand.

“Food?” He lifted a brow, pointing at said bag.
