I pressed on her contact again and waited for it to ring.

“Hello?” came her beautiful voice.

It grounded me instantly.

“Hey,” I breathed. “Sorry, the last few hours have been a whirlwind.”

“Uh,” she stuttered. “Shouldn’t you have been sleeping?”

I gave a weak laugh.

“Ash, what’s wrong? You sound off.”

“So, I guess my dad’s dying or something. I’m in Chicago.”

“What?” she shouted right into my ear. “And you’re just telling me this now?”

“I didn’t want to wake you up,” I tried, but she was already fired up.

And if anything was for sure, Freya was formidable when she was fired up.

“That’s total bullshit!” she hissed, whisper-yelling at me because she was probably at work. “I’m heading out there now. Where are you at?”

“No, you don’t need to do that—”

“Don’t you dare! I’m buying the ticket now. I’m landing at…seven fifteen. You can either tell me where to go when I arrive, or I’ll find you on my own. Pick wisely, because only one scenario will end in an epic kiss.”

God, I loved her.

“Fine,” I grumbled, though I couldn’t help the pull of my lips into a smile. “I’ll be there to pick you up.”

“You better. Now, are you ok? How did you find out?”

“I’m ok. I’m just…It’s a lot. I’ll tell you about it when you get here.”

“Ok. I’ve got to get out of here and get home to pack. I’ll see you soon. Love you.”

“Love you too,” I whispered, and the line shut off.

“I didn’t know you had a girlfriend,” Felicity stated, watching me with a soft smile.

“Not that it’s any of your damn business, or your PI’s, but we only got together recently.”

“I’m happy to hear that. Love is hard to come by.”

I was annoyed that she’d been listening in to my conversation, but she was right. Love was hard to come by.

“And if I can judge by that conversation alone, she sounds like a firecracker.”

I snorted.

“Yeah, she’s magnificent to behold, especially when she’s mad.”

Felicity gave a long sigh of pleasure as she seemed to think about it.

“I’m happy for you, my boy. You’ve done well for yourself, despite the start you had.”

I nodded, feeling oddly sentimental toward this woman who I’d only just met.
