“Yeah, me too,” was all I could say.

A nurse came into the room, knocking softly on the door before entering.

“Ah, you must be the son,” she said, giving me that practiced smile that medical professionals had mastered. “I’m glad you could make it. I’m sure Joe will be happy to see you.”

My head whipped over to Felicity.

“He knew I was coming?”

She shrugged.

“If it makes any difference, I had already sent Woodrough after you before Joe asked for you by name.”

I ground my teeth in frustration. The last thing I wanted was for him to wake up thinking that I was there for him. Dying wish or not, my father could suck a big, dirty cock.

“Felecia tells me that the prognosis isn’t good,” I said to the nurse. “How much longer does he have?”

“We’re not sure,” she admitted. “I can have the doctor stop in and you can talk about it with him.”

I agreed and she went about checking on his vital monitors, then emptying the catheter pack that was hanging off one side of the bed.

“He’s in an induced coma at the moment,” Felecia said, turning her head away from the work the nurse was doing. “But vitals haven’t gone back to normal. His heart is weak.”

“I’m surprised it works at all,” I grumbled.

The nurse must’ve heard me because she looked right at me with surprised, judgy eyes.

“Oh, believe me,” I said directly to her. “If he beat you like he did me when I was a kid, you’d agree with the sentiment.”

The nurse hightailed it out of there without another glance.

“Tsk, you shouldn’t say things like that to strangers, hun,” Felicity scolded.

“Distasteful, sure, but nonetheless true.”

I just shrugged and looked at my phone.

Nine hours until Freya arrived. It was going to be the longest fucking nine hours of my life.

Chapter 38

Freya

I was running around in a state of shock. I didn’t know what the hell I was doing while packing an assortment of clothes. Aubrey, my supervisor, hadn’t been so thrilled about me taking more time off, but she’d let me go because evidently she liked the military, and I might’ve rubbed in that my boyfriend who needed me was a Special Ops vet.

The only thing I had left to do was to find a ride. I’d thought about asking one of the girls to take me, but they were all working. The only one I knew who would have the time was Mom. So, I got in my car and went to my parents’ house. Except nobody was there.

“Shit,” I grumbled, pulling out my phone to call my mother.

“Hey honey, everything ok?” she asked me, picking up immediately.

“Well, sort of. I’m fine, but I need a ride to the airport.”

“Airport? Why do you need a ride to the airport?”

I heard Dad’s voice in the background, so I knew where she was. They must have been having one of their mid-week lunches together at the dealership.

I got the car started again and plugged my phone in.
