I just grinned at him, giving the poor guy a break before he started to sweat. I wasn’t sure why he looked nervous but it was the first real proper date he’d planned ahead of time. Still, seeing an ex-Raider nervous was pretty hilarious.

Still holding my hand, we left the hotel and drove to a fancy-ass restaurant with a valet and everything.

He got out of the car at the front, looking dapper in his gray slacks and white button-up, open at the collar.

The valet reached for my door, but Ash shook his head and opened it himself, reaching down to help me out.

I took his hand, practically floating to my feet as he pulled me from the low seat of the Firebird.

With a flick of his wrist, Ash shot the valet the keys and got the ticket the young man held out.

“Look at you, Mr. Bond,” I teased.

“Don’t get too used to it,” he shot right back, following it up with an adorable wink.

He gave his name to the front desk and they brought us right back to the table set for two.

I started getting suspicious about halfway through the meal, because his never-ending appetite was dampened and he kept looking at his watch, like he was waiting for something. What the hell did the man have planned?

After paying for the exorbitant meal of filet mignon, we worked our way back to the hotel. Ash wasn’t talking anymore. When we got back to the hotel, I helped myself out of my own door and left my shoes in the car before turning on my boyfriend. So much for a nice, romantic evening.

“Ok, whatever it is that has your panties in a knot, get it out, because whatever this news or something is, it’s ruining things, Ash. Let’s get it out so we can enjoy the rest of the night.”

He blew out a breath and took my hand, pulling me to the beach while saying absolutely nothing, which spiked my annoyance and worry even more.

“Ash!” I demanded, pulling on his hand. “Out with it!”

Ashton took a step back from me, shoving his hands into his slacks pockets and stared at the sand beneath our feet for a long moment before dropping to his knee.

“I wanted to wait,” he whispered, holding out a hand to me. “I wanted to wait but I couldn’t. I’m an impatient bastard, Frey. Please tell me you’ll marry me and put me out of my misery.”

Chapter 46

Ashton

My hands were fucking shaking. I felt wound up and half numb as I stared up into her surprised eyes and waited. Fuck, the waiting. My heart wouldn’t stop pounding.

“What?” she squeaked out, neither a yes or a no.

“You fucking heard me,” I choked out, nudging out the ring between my fingers.

It was my mother’s ring. The thing I ran back into the house for back in Chicago was my mother’s wedding ring. I knew she’d want Freya to have it, and so did I. If Frey wanted it, anyway.

“You’re shitting me!” she barked out, covering her face with her hands.

The nerves started to die away when I realized that I’d really just screwed up.

She didn’t want to marry me.

Backtracking to save my own pride, I dropped my hand and started to stand, but she tackled me to the sand, pressing kisses all over my face.

“You stupid lunkhead! You can’t just drop a bomb like that on a girl! Holy shit, of course I’ll marry you!”

Euphoria like nothing I’d ever experienced before blew through my body, making my limbs limp as she snatched up the ring and slipped it onto her finger, though the ring was too small.

Damn it, I should’ve made sure it fit somehow.

“Are you serious?” she asked again, still on top of me.
