Going my usual route with communication, I just grunted.

“I’ll take that as a ‘sure, Angel, I’ll be there. In fact, I’m driving’.”

I let out a huff of a chuckle and made my way over to the Mercedes that Tommy was pulling into the second bay.

“Hey, check this out!” he called with a laugh in his voice, getting out of the car to walk around to the back.

I followed while he cackled to himself, then saw the back window.

Clean.

Completely clean.

No grid for defrost anywhere to be seen.

“Owner says his ten year old kid was washing the car for a few bucks,” Tommy hiccupped with glee. “Scaped every last bit off the back window, then tried to charge his dad extra for cleaning the inside of the windows!”

I couldn’t help it, I cackled right along with my buddy.

“You’re shitting me,” I hacked out, coughing because laughing felt so weird.

He nudged my shoulder with his, shaking his head.

“I’d have murdered the kid, mine or not!” Tommy admitted. “That’s one expensive car wash.”

“Kids, man,” was all I added as I stared through the clear glass.

He smacked me on the bicep, then went through the door to the office, probably heading back to the showroom to sell some more cars.

After another glance at the rather commendable job the kid did getting the window clean, I headed over to go get the repair kit I’d need to fix up the oopsie.

Chapter 11

Freya

The knock on my office door made me jump, just as my eyes darted to the clock on the wall across from my desk. Quarter to seven.

I’d gotten caught up in writing paychecks, since payday was right around the corner, and then I’d spent too long staring at Ashton’s name after writing it on his check. And damn, how I wanted to put a stupid little F-r-e-y-a and a heart next to the six little letters that managed to encompass the entirety of the man I was way too hyper-focused on lately.

“Uh, yeah! Come in!” I called, gathering up all the envelopes on my desk and shoving them into the box that would be stored in the safe in Dad’s office.

“I’m heading out,” Ashton said from my doorway. “Looks like your dad left for the day already, so I wanted to wait for you to finish up.”

He paused and let out a grunt.

“Looks like your dad isn’t the only workaholic.”

I snorted, though he was right. Except it wasn’t my work ethic that had kept me late this time.

“Just got to bring this to Dad’s office, then I’ll head out,” I assured him. “You still need any help with the Firebird?”

He shrugged.

“I wouldn’t mind the company, but I can finish it up by myself. Should be done tonight, if I can manage to get home before the sun goes down.”

His voice was grumbly and grumpy, but when I looked up into his eyes, he winked at me with an amused tilt to his lips.

“Sure, sure, I’m hurrying,” I grumbled right back, fisting the envelopes in my hand while I got up from the desk and gathered my purse. “You know you don’t have to wait for me. I’ve closed up a million times.”
