For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

Matthew 6:21

Avery recounted seeing Kevin earlier today. I was fuming when she told me. Kevin is a piece of work for trying to corner her once again in public, even if it was an accidental run-in.

Kevin and his pitiful attempt to try to win her back. And, of fucking course, he’s with the assistant.

To be honest, I was surprised by his random contact with Avery. I haven’t been able to figure out what his end game with her is. Furious with her one moment and silent the next. Apparently, he’s been trying to reach out, but that isn’t believable either. I have no fucking clue what this guy’s deal is.

He’s an enigma. From the business dealings to the random money being pulled out of their account to fucking his assistant. And here I am, thinking I have problems. Kevin is single-handedly destroying his life and doesn’t seem to realize it.

Lies and deceit always catch up to you. I sure as fuck know that’s the truth.

After Avery told me about Kevin, I caught her up on me resigning to Greg. She wasn’t all that surprised that he was shocked and wanted me to stay.

As we lie here in our bed together, I know that all the pieces are falling into place for us to be together. We just need to be able to make it through her divorce and the next couple of weeks that I’m still a priest at St. Peter’s.

Avery’s nestled tightly against my chest as I stroke her back and play with the ends of her long, blonde hair. I place a small kiss at the top of her head.

I love this woman so fucking much. I can’t wait to make her mine forever.

“Lachlan…” she whispers to me.

“Yeah, baby?”

“I love you.”

I can feel her smile against my chest, and I can’t help but smile too.

“And I love you, Avery.”

More than she’ll ever understand. Avery was an unexpected gift from God to a broken man. I don’t deserve her, but I will try to be the man she needs every day for the rest of my life.

The next day, I return to the Parish office early. Everyone who’s already there is eyeing me suspiciously.

I’m sure news has already spread that I’m resigning. It’s not common for a priest to resign without there being a major scandal pushing them out.

We’ve all seen the news when a priest is caught doing something fucked up, and the Catholic Church isn’t able to hide it from the public. Since no one knows about Avery, everyone is confused about why I’m leaving. As I begin settling in to take a final look at the gala details, I hear a curt clear of a throat.

I look up to find Patricia.

“Good morning; how can I help you?” I casually ask.

“Leaving already?”

I pull at my collar around my neck. Every day I still have to wear it makes me feel like a fraud.

“I have my reasons.”

Simple, I won’t give anyone any reason to be suspicious.

“I’m sure you do.”

I trust Patricia to an extent, but not enough to think we’re anything close to being friends.

She walks toward me and pulls out a chair on the opposite side of my desk before beginning. I notice the gala binder that’s usually on my desk is in her hands.

“I took the liberty of going over this already, and here are the remaining approvals I need. Just finishing up the paperwork with vendors,” she states.
