Running to the door, she lets me in. I shut the door behind me and lock it again.

Avery’s arms swing around my neck, pulling me into an embrace. I wrap my arms around her too. I slowly run one of my hands down her back to try to soothe her panic.

“What happened?”

She breaks away first, and tears start to trickle down her cheeks.

“Ugh, sorry, I’m not actually sad about this, but I’m so happy you’re home,” she says as she wipes the tears away.

Avery disappears into the bedroom before returning with a similar manilla envelope.

She hands it to me.

I open it up knowing exactly what I’ll find but needing the confirmation.

As I’m doing that, she continues, “Someone knows about us. Or is suspicious, at least.”

I quickly flip through them. It’s the same set of photos. Someone is trying to scare us. I set the photos and envelope down on a nearby table.

Taking Avery’s hand, I lead her to the couch before pulling her on top of me. She’s straddling me, waiting for my response.

I don’t want to spook her, but after everything, we both deserve the truth no matter the circumstances.

“I got the same set today. Right before I went to leave, I found the package on my desk. Then Greg implied there have been whispers about how I haven’t been staying at my house lately.”

“I need to call Noah and see what’s happening. This has Kevin, Greg, and whoever else is involved with this written all over it. You agree, right?”

“I do; let’s give him a call and see what he says.”

“God, when will this nightmare just be over.”

“Don’t worry, we’re in this together.”

“I know,” she sounds relieved but still nervous.

“Avery, those photos are innocent. Meant to scare us. If they had something more intimate, then we would have gotten those. Right now, all this shows is that we see each other outside of the church grounds, and there is nothing wrong with that.”

“I know, you’re right,” she whispers.

“And if anything, who better to be spending your time with than your priest while going through a divorce?”

She leans down and gives me a soft kiss on the lips.

Chapter 28

Better a poor man who walks in his integrity than he who is crooked in his ways and rich.

Proverbs 28:6

I waited until Saturday morning to call Noah. I needed time to process everything, and I didn’t want to further distract him from his plan on my case. He explained everything to me, so much that it’s almost a blur.

He’s worried about these packages that Lachlan and I received.

Explaining to him that I’m in a relationship with my priest was a strange experience. It was the first real acknowledgment that I’m in a relationship with Lachlan.

I don’t have many friends anymore, especially not in Charleston, and I don’t have any family that I am still in touch with. I haven’t mentioned it to Fisher yet, but we haven’t spoken in a while.

Noah told me it wasn’t a problem I needed to worry about, but I should try to keep it under wraps until my papers are signed.
