“Oh dear, we have certainly missed you. Thank you, but this is all you. We just brought it to life,” she warmly replies.

“That’s not true; it was a team effort. Thank you for letting me be part of it,” I answer.

“Nonsense,” she says.

“Is Father Lachlan here?” I ask.

She smiles almost knowingly.

“Yes, dear. Straight through the doors, he should be speaking with the venue event coordinator. We’ve had a bit of a mishap already,” she sighs.

“Thank you.”

I find Lachlan exactly where Patricia told me he’d be. Lachlan and the venue coordinator are speaking rapidly, trying to solve the issue, so I wait outside the office door.

“That would be great,” I hear Lachlan say, sounding pleased.

I wish I could have been here to help him earlier today.

The sound of men’s dress shoes catches my attention.

Lachlan is looking down at his cell phone, not paying attention to his surroundings. His eyebrows are pinched together, jaw clenched, clearly annoyed that he still doesn’t have any cell service here.

I have to take a step back before he walks into me.

“Oh, excuse me,” he says apologetically, glancing up at me before returning his gaze to his phone.

Then he realizes it’s me.

Lachlan’s eyes widen in surprise before concern takes over.

“Avery, what are you doing here? Are you okay?”

Lachlan grips my outer arms gently and looks me over. He scans my body for any sign of harm from our run-in.

“Lachlan, I’m fine, you didn’t hurt me. But I’ve been trying to reach you.”

He looks around before he pulls me into an open, unused office across the hallway.

“My cell phone has no service in this place. Are you okay? What happened?”

Lachlan frantically searches my face for anything wrong. He’s on guard now, looking around us and back to me.

“I’m good. I’m safe,” I start. “But I got another package.”

I recap the events from earlier today with him.

“Fuck,” he mutters under his breath.

“I wish you wouldn’t have come—it’s not safe for you. But I understand why you did. If anything were to happen to you…” Lachlan trails off.

His eyes close momentarily. I rest a comforting hand on his chest.

“Lachlan, I feel the same way, which is why I’m here. It’s definitely Kevin. Should you leave?”

“Fuck no, I’m not running away with my tail between my legs because of him. Let him come. That’s barely proof of anything,” he scoffs.

“Lachlan…”
