The second is us outside the parish office, and my hand is placed on his shoulder.

The third is of us, shoulder to shoulder, walking along the street one evening.

The fourth is me in his car.

And the fifth is what gets me.

Kevin knows.

Lachlan and I are walking hand in hand to the elevator inside the apartment building lobby. It was so natural we must have felt safe in our space and didn’t realize we were still technically in a public place.

I have to let Lachlan know. Kevin will show up tonight. He’s not going to stop whatever madman plan he’s involved in. I guarantee he’ll be more than happy to ruin Lachlan in the process if he knows his toy has moved on.

I try Lachlan on his cell phone again, and there’s still no answer. It’s only five p.m. I could get dressed for the gala, go inside, and warn Lachlan, then head back home before anyone else arrives.

Trying his cell phone once more, I get no answer.

“This is a good idea; I have to warn him,” I say out loud.

Whether this is true or not, I have to get to Lachlan first. I have to try before something terrible happens.

When I get out of the shower, I pick up my phone to find a series of texts from Lachlan. His phone has bad service inside the event venue, and he’s not sure if I’ve been trying to reach him. He’ll be home by ten tonight.

At least I know that he must not be getting any of my calls.

I have a feeling the rest of the night won’t be as easy to clear up.

Chapter 29

For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare, not for woe! Plans to give you a future full of hope.

Jeremiah 29:11

Looking at myself in the mirror, I do a final check that everything is in the right place. Not bad for pulling this look together in thirty minutes.

In my signature blue color, I swish my gown around. It’s adorned with small sequins on the bottom, giving it that extra something special I like to have on when I get dressed up for an event.

I change out my purse for one that matches my dress and make my way to leave.

I have to do this.

Now is the time to be confident, to be brave. I can’t let Lachlan be blindsided by Kevin now that I have this final confirmation he’s aware we are seeing one another.

I send Lachlan a text explaining everything. I’ll be there soon enough.

My transportation is waiting for me downstairs. I hop in the waiting car and head to the venue to warn Lachlan.

I know I’ll get there in time. I have to.

The venue we picked is gorgeous. It has an intimate feel to it but has the space to host the five hundred guests that will be here tonight. Everything looks exactly as we planned.

I look around to see roses spilling from everywhere. Candles are lit throughout the entrance and walkway to get to the main space. Glasses of champagne are ready for guests on arrival.

Reaching the check-in desk, I find Patricia.

“Hi, Patricia, great job,” I beam.

I’m proud of what we’ve done.
