I turn around and hand him the small diamond-crusted locket. The details are so intricate you would have to stare at it to capture its full beauty.

The feel of Lachlan’s fingertips skimming against my skin sends shivers down my body.

I turn back to face them both and try to get rid of the thoughts of how I really would like to be thanking him right now.

Patricia has a warm smile on her face as she eyes us both.

“Well, I just have to use the ladies’ room, and then I’ll be out of here. Thank you again,” I say.

I appreciate that Patricia hasn’t questioned why I’m not here. I have a feeling she knows something is going on between Lachlan and me.

I can feel Lachlan’s eyes tracking my movements through the event as I head to the closest restroom I can locate.

I’m glad I came to warn him, but something feels off. Not between us, but this evening. Kevin will be here soon, and I just hope he doesn’t ruin the night or try to confront Lachlan.

I really have no idea how Kevin will try to play this out with so many community members expected to be here as well.

Passing by the opulently decorated tables, I feel proud of this work. Champagne glasses are stacked on each other, forming towers filled to the brim with the finest of champagnes all around the room. A last-minute touch I added before saying goodbye to my planning efforts.

As I finish washing my hands in the restroom, I stare at my reflection in the mirror. The changes that have taken place, the woman I am turning into, it’s all there looking back at me.

I like what I see in front of me. This version of me is one I’ve worked hard to become.

Deep breaths, it’s time to get out of here.

While slipping out of the door I’m jerked back suddenly. I feel a hand go over my mouth and another around my waist. These hands grip me harshly, and I can barely breathe.

What is happening to me?

I begin to panic as my eyes race frantically around my surroundings.

My mind is going a million miles per hour, but my body has shut down. I’m unmoving as I let this person assault me. Frozen in place as horror takes over.

I try to speak but can’t as my body finally starts to act. I begin trying to escape from this person’s hold on me. I must not really be moving much because it’s not working. My eyes begin to prick with tears.

The person slowly starts to drag me backward into the dark between the restrooms and an emergency exit sign flashing brightly.

Looking away from the sign, I see the door slightly ajar. This must be how this person got in here unnoticed. No one is manning the side doors.

And why would they be?

This is meant to be a special event for a Catholic church. A Christian function, not the place where a woman should be afraid of being assaulted.

My body knows it should be fighting back more than it is, but I can’t move one way or the other as my brain shuts down. I shouldn’t be letting this person take control.

Breathe, Avery, breathe.

“That’s right, be my meek little sweetheart, wife,” the voice grates.

My mind blocks out the surrounding noise.

It’s him.

Kevin is my attacker.

Of course, the average woman wouldn’t need to be afraid to be here. But I knew I did, and I let my guard down.

Kevin is here.
