He’s come for me.

Noah had tried to warn me not to leave my apartment under any circumstances because of all of the filings we were doing to nail Kevin down and clear my name. And here I am, now under Kevin’s punishing grasp, fighting for my life.

He kicks what is holding the door slightly open and attempts to pull us both through the exit. That’s when my instincts finally kick in, and I know I have to take my chance.

I am not helpless. I have to do something before I’m taken somewhere else where no one will know where I am or who I am.

I need to act. And I need to act now.

I bite down hard on his fingers covering my mouth. Blood is on my lips—I must have broken his skin.

“Fuck,” he yells loudly.

I stomp one of my heels down onto one of his feet, causing him to partially let go of me and lurch over in pain. My arm slips from his hold. I rip his hand away from my mouth fully and scream.

Trying to break further away, I pull all of my weight to get out of his grasp. I’m almost there as I swing my elbow back as hard as I can into his stomach.

His hold is gone completely.

About to dart away, something hard and heavy hits the top of my head.

Everything goes dark around me.

Chapter 30

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:8

Looking down at my watch, I realize it’s been several minutes since Avery went to the restroom. I’ve been waiting to say goodbye to her before everyone arrives.

People will be here soon, and I don’t want Avery around for a chance encounter with Kevin. I can handle whatever Kevin wants to throw my way, whatever scene he wants to make, but I can’t let her get hurt.

Making my way to the restroom, I stop in my tracks. A blood-curdling scream rips through the venue.

Avery.

I shout for someone to call the police as I sprint to where the sound came from. If anything happens to Avery, I’ll never be able to forgive myself. She is mine to keep safe.

What was I thinking, not walking with her to the restroom when we knew Kevin had been taunting us? We both knew we needed to be on high alert.

Even with the restraining order, there is no way that someone like Kevin would be taken down so easily. I should have known better. This will be my fault if anything happens to Avery tonight.

I dash into the women’s restroom, not caring if someone is in here. I kick open each stall to make sure no one is hiding. Frantically, I run my hand through my hair to try to think of what to do next.

There is no sign of Avery in here. I have to keep searching the area.

Leaving the restroom, I’m about to head back toward the front to see if the police have arrived when I notice sequins on the ground.

Navy-blue sequins that look similar to the ones that were on Avery’s gown. They are right between the two restrooms and another door.

Looking up, I see a low-flashing light appear through what looks like an emergency entrance.

Fuck.

I open the door to the stairwell and run down the two flights of stairs.

That’s when I see Avery. And Kevin… and Frank? Fucking Frank. Kevin and Frank are carrying Avery’s almost-lifeless body and heading for the exit door.
