Panic fills me as I stare at her limp in their arms.

“Fucking stop,” I shout at them.

Kevin and Frank’s eyes shoot up to me as my chest hangs over the railing. I’m heaving uncontrollably witnessing this.

I dart down the flight of stairs as they freeze because of my presence. I hop over the last few stairs to be face-to-face with her kidnappers now. Frank is surprised by me finding them like this. He’s sweating uncontrollably, looking at me like a deer in headlights. Meanwhile, I’m surprised Kevin hasn’t forced him to keep going.

Instead, Kevin is sneering at me like a child who just found out he couldn’t play with me on the playground.

I slowly take a step toward them both. Letting out a stabling, low sigh, I glance down to Avery before looking Kevin in the eye.

“You don’t have to do this, Kevin; let her go,” I demand.

He scoffs at me, shaking his head while rolling his eyes.

Kevin may have the upper hand right now, but he’s still nervous. I can see his deep swallow and a vein protruding from his neck. Back to facing me directly, I can see nothing but venom in his eyes.

“Go fuck yourself, Father,” he snarls.

I can’t react to that, not when I have Avery to think about. Normally, I’d tell him to stop being a little bitch because she didn’t want to be with him.

“Kevin. Let. Her. Go. Now,” I say, enunciating each word slowly.

Let that sink in. I have to play this right. If I let them leave this stairwell, it’ll only mean more harm will come to Avery.

Kevin turns his head slightly to glance through the square window box on the door. He’s waiting for someone else. I just need to buy more time for the police to get here. It’s not like Kevin or Frank know that they should be arriving any minute.

“Kevin, it’s over. You shouldn’t have gotten Avery mixed up in whatever the fuck business this is of yours. Leave her behind and run.”

Kevin turns back to me.

“You don’t have any fucking clue, do you?” Kevin screams.

It causes Frank and me both to flinch.

“I guess not, so here. Put Avery down, and why don’t you tell me?”

I’m trying to remain as calm as possible, but it’s becoming harder to do.

“You think I’m running this? That’s fucking rich. Why don’t you ask your precious Father Greg what all this is about first,” Kevin responds.

There is panic and anger coursing through his body.

“I thought it was you leading him? I’ll be honest here; I haven’t worked that piece out,” I say truthfully.

“That’s because this whole operation is bigger than you, me, or even Frank here,” Kevin snarls as he waves a gun I hadn’t noticed before around mindlessly in the air above his head.

Where did that come from? Was it in his other hand this whole time?

“Okay, calm down, Kevin. You don’t have to make things worse than they already are.”

“Calm down? Right.” He laughs maniacally.

Frank keeps darting his focus between Kevin and me. Unsure of what the fuck is going to happen next.

Suddenly, a cool breeze washes over me as someone opens the door that Kevin has been waiting at. Lo and behold, it’s Greg.

“Now, now, boys. Let’s not cause a bigger scene than needed,” Greg calmly says.
