“I have something important to tell you. I don’t want it to ruin the night,” I say, getting more serious than before.

I know I have to talk to him about what I did yesterday. Lachlan looks at me with nothing but tenderness in his expression. His body is still relaxed, like anything I bring up can’t possibly be a problem.

“Nothing you could say could ruin the night,” he replies.

Lachlan laughs lightly before continuing, “Well, almost nothing I should say.”

“In that case, this does not fall into that category. The opposite, actually.”

I’m absolutely nervous to be sharing this with him. But I feel like talking about my separation will give us more permission to explore what’s happening between us.

Deep breaths, Avery.

“I did it. I left him. Yesterday.”

I stare up into two twinkling green eyes, crinkling at the sides. His mouth is turning up slightly before he can’t hold back his mega-watt smile from taking over.

His smiles are contagious. One takes over my face as well in response.

“Goldie, that right there is about the best news you could share with me.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really.”

I can’t stop smiling at him.

“I know this is new, but I know I’ve never felt like this before. I want to explore what you and I could become.”

He pauses, and I see his forehead crease slightly.

“You didn’t leave him for me, right?”

My heart pounds harder than I can imagine right before the feeling of my stomach dropping takes over.

“No, no, of course not. I told you weeks ago about how we were broken,” I say almost defensively.

A terrible thought is pulsing through me. I force myself to take my hands away from him and sit up straighter to process what I’m thinking.

“Would it have been such a bad thing if I did?”

He shakes his head, letting those locks fall even more out of place before swooping his hand through them.

“Fuck no, Goldie. I didn’t mean it like that at all. I wanted to make sure you did it for you, not for some bastard like me who would take you however you would give yourself to him.”

I let out a heavy, thankful sigh.

There is one more unspoken notion we have to address.

“What about you, Lachlan?”

His smile is fainter now, and he stiffens slightly at my question.

Lachlan knows what’s coming next.

I’m not the only one with a past I need to work out. It’s time Lachlan answers the question that I need to know the truth to.

“I know you said you want to try and explore what this is, and we should take this day by day… but are you really willing to just walk away from the life you built as a priest?”
