I heard footsteps at the top of the stairs, felt my pack brother running towards us. I couldn’t stop now. This was for her, everything was for her.

“Hurry,” she hissed, and panic flared inside me as I fumbled with the key, trying to push it into the lock as quickly as possible. But I couldn’t see the lock properly against the wall.

“Faster!” she barked. I didn’t care if my princess was angry. Of course she was. I wasn’t being the best I could be for her.

He was nearly at the door now. If I freed her, we could both fight, both escape, run away together and be free.

The door slammed open, bouncing off the wall, echoing around us as Lucien towered over us.

I turned to him, his eyes yellow with fury as he leapt towards us.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he snarled.

Something inside me cracked, and the room flooded back in around me. My wolf was howling from within, struggling to free himself. I realised with horror that a spell had broken, the excitement at freeing her shifting into fear.

Something was really, really wrong. My body was plunged into ice as I sat back from her, my eyes scanning her face, my eyebrows knitting together in confusion.

Blinking away the haze, my mind cleared.

“Why did you do that?” I choked out a cry, looking at the princess. Every part of me ached as the shock that she had compelled me sunk in. Why would she compel me when she knew I would do anything for her?

I thought Valko said she could bewitch us because he wanted to keep her for himself, that he kept her blindfolded and gagged so we couldn’t speak to her, but I was so, so wrong.

I wanted an answer, but her focus was on him, her body turning, her blind eyes looking over my shoulder to meet his.

Obviously, she was fixed on him. Because it was Lucien. It was always Lucien. Even when they were apart, they were connected. The pack bond was only stronger because of the first time he visited her.

I was forgotten as tension rose around them, vibrating in the room as the two of them blended together, still and silent.

A growl brewed in me as Lucien stepped towards her. I was still between them. I could have fought him if I was bigger, to protect her, or own her, but maybe she didn’t want it. Maybe she wanted him, and I was just here to be used.

Lucien grabbed my collar and yanked me back. I landed on the floor with a yelp, my hands softening the impact. I lifted my head to snarl at him, but they were lost. They stared at each other, fierce energy snapping between them.

“Red…” he sang her name. “Have you been playing with our little pup?”

“Aaah,” she groaned, shrugging as she straightened her back, leaning against the wall. Her joints cracked and she sighed like she was shedding a skin. “It’s all fun and games in the end, is it not?” Her mouth curved into a cruel smile. Lucien folded his arms and stared down at her, replying with a twist of his lips as his eyes flashed with amusement.

Did…Did that mean none of it was real? Was she just tricking me so she could free herself?

My heart split in two as I looked at the way they glared at each other. The blindfold couldn’t keep them apart. There was something special there, and that dark, poisonous jealousy curled my insides and corrupted my heart again as my fists tightened against the cold stone floor.

She had made me into an idiot. Made me think that she loved me. No, it couldn’t be possible. If that was true, then why was our bond so open while she drank from me?

“Don’t get too close, Lucien,” she said, tilting her chin. Her voice had become sultry like I never expected. I thought she was light, airy, and gracious in her beauty. Her back curved, her chest pushing out, nipples hard as she leaned against the wall and adjusted her hips. “You never know what I might do.”

The air crackled around us, and that horrible feeling flared brighter as I saw how powerful their connection really was.

“Fillian.” Lucien didn’t tear his eyes away from her. “Time for a new lesson on the finer ways of women,” he said. A low growl rumbled in his chest as he looked down at the princess.

Even though my body ached, and my heart was breaking at her betrayal, excitement still hummed in me as I pushed myself up, stepping closer to them.

This is what I wanted. To touch her, to hold her, to even bite her with no Valko there to stop me. Lucien would let me do what I wanted, wouldn’t he? I wouldn’t need to pretend to follow orders when she was here, right in front of me, waiting to be mine.
