Breanna nods, and I turn around. I can go left, back downstairs, or right, down the hall to my bedroom. I have a bar in my bedroom, and I think a drink might do us good. So, I turn right and head down the hallway.

When I reach the end, I push open the door to my bedroom and turn to see Breanna is trailing behind me slowly, her eyes on the ground.

Clearly, she’s not thinking about hopping into bed with me, even though that’s exactly what I want.

I march over to the bar in the corner and take down two glasses. “What do you want?”

Breanna stands just inside the doorway. “Um, I don’t know.”

“How about I make something for you, and you try it?”

Breanna nods. She takes a few steps closer until she’s right beside me, leaning on the oaken surface of the bar cart.

I make her a Jack Daniels and add in quite a bit of ice to soften the flavor. Breanna accepts the glass, takes a sip, and makes a face.

I laugh at her.

That is enough to break the tension. She balances on the end of my bed, holding the glass in her hand. “Wow. This is a little strong, but I can’t say I don’t like it.”

“What did you want to talk about?” I ask, bringing us back to the main focus.

"It's just... I’ve been thinking about what you said.” The smile slides from Breanna’s face, and the way she taps at her glass makes her seem nervous. I haven’t seen this side of her before. “I never expected you to say something like that, and it's made me realize... well, it's made me realize that I feel the same way. I… don’t want to lose you."

"Really?"

"Yeah... I mean, I never thought I'd find someone who truly understands me, who sees me for who I am and still likes me. But with you, it's different. I feel like I can be myself around you, like I don't have to pretend to be someone I'm not."

"That means a lot to me, Breanna. I've felt the same way about you since the moment we met. You're one of the most genuine, caring people I've ever known, and being around you makes me a better person. I love seeing you with Jaxon, and...."

I don’t know what else to say. I’ve never been good at talking about my feelings. How do I shape the fear I felt when Breanna quit, not just because I would have to scramble to find care for Jaxon but because I wouldn’t see her again.

"Wow... I don't know what to say. To hear you say that, it’s like...." Apparently, Breanna is having trouble finding words too.

"It's true, Breanna. I care about you deeply, more than I've ever cared about anyone before. It’s like… you’re hot, and I’ve noticed that since the beginning, but you’re more than just… a sexy woman. You have… layers.”

Breanna presses a hand to her heart, and I realize that tears are welling up in her eyes. I set my drink on the bedside table and wrap both of my arms around her.

I whisper, “I want you to know that I'll always be here for you, no matter what."

"I... I don't know what to say, Harrison. I want to believe you, but…”

"I understand, Breanna. You haven’t had a good person in your life in a while. I can’t…” I don’t want to mention Garrett’s name, worried that just the sound of it will break the spell between the two of us.

“What I can do is show you,” I say, my voice still soft.

As I sit there with Breanna, the air between us crackles with a tension I can't ignore. Her eyes meet mine, and in that moment, I know she feels it too. She wants me, and I want her.

"Breanna," I say softly, my voice barely above a whisper, "I want you because…"

She nods before I can even finish my thought. "I want you too," she replies, her voice equally hushed.

Without another word, I lean in, capturing her lips with mine in a kiss more passionate than the one earlier, the one Jaxon interrupted with his grotesque faces. It is like fireworks exploding in the night sky, igniting a flame that burns hotter with each passing moment.

Her arms wrap around my neck, pulling me closer as our kiss deepens. Her lips pull at mine, and I feel her tongue dart out and meet mine.

Then, she tugs at my bottom lip, biting down gently so that my desire zips from our connected lips down to the crotch of my pants. The world around us fades away, leaving only the two of us lost in each other.

I don’t want this to happen too quickly, so even though my hands are begging to rip at her clothes, I force them to keep the barrier of cloth between them and Breanna’s skin.
