Chapter One

Day 1

“Ay, get up.”

McKenna felt something hard and cold against her arm then her chest but she had to be dreaming. There was no way she wasn’t because she was alone in her house. She turned over to her side and pulled the covers up before attempting to settle her mind again.

“Did you hear what I said? Get yo’ ass up.”

A rush of cold air immediately chilled McKenna’s skin, causing her eyes to pop open. The covers had been snatched away from her body. She looked around the dark room frantically before her heavy eyes landed on a medium-build, dark figure standing over her bed. Instincts kicked in and she hurried to the other side, climbing off the mattress in an expedited manner while her heart created an imprint in her chest.

“What… what do you want? How did you get in here?”

He snorted while his greedy gaze swept her frame. Even through the darkness, she could feel his eyes tracing every inch of her body. Realizing she was dressed in only a t-shirt and panties had McKenna’s pulse speeding up. This man wasn’t here to be friendly. He wanted something, possibly her.

“Don’t ask no damn questions just bring your ass. You have work to do.”

“Work… what are you talking about? Who are you? Why are you in my house?”

Her breath lodged in her throat when he slowly raised what she was certain had to be a gun. Turning it slowly, he aimed the black metal piece at her head.

“I already told you, don’t ask no damn questions. Now do you want to do this the hard way or the easy way because I don’t have time for this shit. If he dies while I’m in here playing twenty questions with you, that’s not going to work out in your favor.”

Dies? Who the hell is he talking about?

She froze in a statue-like position until he barked out his last order. This time with a little more aggression.

“Move, now!”

Not wanting to piss this man off any more than she already had, McKenna hurried around her bed, keeping as much distance between the two of them as possible.

“Where are we going? Can I at least put some clothes on?”

By this time he was close. So close she could smell the night air on his skin mixed with a hint of alcohol and weed. She could also see his eyes travel the length of her body before he smiled smugly.

“Nah, I like you like this. Let’s go.”

He pushed the gun he was holding into her shoulder, nudging McKenna toward the bedroom door. Her feet moved without much thought and with him close behind, she navigated through her home that was still dark from the late hour. As soon as McKenna made it to the living room, her eyes went wide and her breath hitched again. She swallowed hard, taking in the sight before her.

“What happened to him?”

“Clearly he was shot.”

“Then why are you here? Take him to a hospital.”

“He can’t do that. You are the hospital.”

“No, I’m not. I can’t…”

“Aren’t you a nurse?” The man with the gun moved closer, leaning down over McKenna, and when she stepped back, he grabbed the front of her shirt, pulling her into his chest.

“Ay,” the other man uttered lowly with anger and authority that had his partner looking his way immediately. “Let her go.”

He didn’t move right away but eventually the man with the gun freed McKenna from his hold and mumbled something under his breath which had his friend speaking up again.

“Ay, go outside. I’ll come get you when I need you.”

“What, nah man. You ain’t in no position to—”
