“Are you questioning me?”

McKenna watched the exchange and could tell the man with the gun was indeed questioning his friend, but he knew better than to verbalize based on the way he backed down and moved to the door, slamming it shut behind him as he left.

“I need your help,” the injured man said to McKenna who tore her eyes away from her door and lowered them to him. She surveyed his body, noticing the balled up t-shirt he held at his shoulder. It, and his long fingers, were also covered in blood.

“With that?” McKenna was shaking her head before he could respond. “I can’t help you with that. What happened? Why did somebody shoot you?”

Avoiding her question, the man asked one of his own. “Don’t you work at a hospital?” She noticed his handsome face twist into a scowl, but she couldn’t tell whether it was from the pain he was in or his annoyance with her.

“Yes but I’m not a nurse. I’m a unit clerk. Just an admin and paper pusher. I can’t do anything with a gunshot.”

She pointed to his shoulder, wide-eyed, keeping her focus on the injury.

“Well you’re gonna have to learn some shit really quickly.”

“What, no. There’s no way.”

“There is a way and you’re gonna figure that shit out. Even if you’re not a nurse you’re there every day. You have to know something, even if by default. Right now all you have to do is patch me up enough so I don’t bleed to death and I can get some rest. I need a few days and then I’ll be out of here.”

“A few days?” McKenna’s eyes stretched wider.

“Yeah, a few days. There’s some shit I need to work through and while I’m doing it, I don’t need anyone running up on me.”

“And what about me?”

“Nobody’s gonna hurt you. That’s not why I’m here.”

Without realizing it, her eyes bounced to the door then back over to the man.

“Not even him. He won’t touch you unless I give him permission. As long as you do what I ask, then we won’t have any issues. Right now, I need you to start with this. Take a look at it for me and see how bad it is. I was bleeding like a muthafucker on the way here and I feel weak as shit right now, so I need to see what I’m dealing with.”

“You need to go to a hospital.”

“I ain’t going to no damn hospital. It’s just us, you’re gonna handle this for me. Now come take a look.”

She stood in place, dazed for a minute. Things were moving too fast but she quickly snapped out of it when he barked out his next orders.

“Move, now.”

She released a shaky breath, inching closer. “I need you to… You’re gonna have to sit up.”

“You’re gonna have to help me.”

The man extended a hand which McKenna accepted hesitantly, pulling against his weight to help him to a seated position. His long frame sank deeper into the sofa with a grimace in place while he removed the blood-soaked t-shirt and tossed it on the table in front of them.

McKenna frowned at the sight then glared at him.

“The fuck you looking at me like that for? Where else am I supposed to put it?”

“Not there,” she hissed before tilting her head to the side. “It doesn’t look like it’s bleeding any more but you’re gonna have to take your hoodie off so I can be sure.”

“I can’t do that. You’re gonna have to get some scissors. I can barely lift this arm.”

He motioned to another blood-soaked spot she’d missed because the hoodie he wore was black.

“How many times did they shoot you?”

“Only one that I know of. You’re gonna have to check that too.”
