“You really need to…”

“I don’t need to do shit but you do. Go get some scissors and hurry up.”

McKenna had an idea of the type of man she was dealing with. She wasn’t crazy enough to push too hard, so instead of arguing like she wanted, she stepped away, heading to the kitchen where she began digging through drawers until she found a pair of scissors. She wrapped her hand around them along with the dish towel that was draped over the sink. When she returned, his head was back and his eyes were closed but he spoke as soon as he felt her standing over his body.

“Be easy or this goes terribly wrong for you.” The man slowly lifted his head, his dark, thin eyes landing on McKenna’s face. The intensity behind his stare had her hand shaking.

“I have to get closer.”

“Come on.”

She filled the space next to him and laid the towel across her knees while she gently lifted his arm, cutting up the sleeve to the neck, down the front, and up the other sleeve. When she was done, she placed the scissors on the table next to the soiled t-shirt.

“Can I?” She held her hand out but paused, waiting for permission to touch him. The man laughed arrogantly, looking down.

“Go ’head, just be easy.”

She pushed the shredded material out the way, gagging a few times, which didn’t help the situation.

“Your squeamish ass damn sure isn’t a nurse.”

McKenna was pissed but she couldn’t debate him. She knew her limits and he was exactly right. It was the reason she’d dropped out of nursing school and decided to work toward an admin position. Instead of making matters worse with an explanation, she began examining the spot where he was shot, first with her eyes, then with timid fingers pressing lightly around the area.

“I don’t think it’s bleeding anymore.” She barely looked at him while her fingers moved across his skin.

“How the fuck are you this timid and you work at a hospital?” He grimaced from the pressure of her fingers on his skin.

“Because I’m not a nurse. I’ve already told you that.”

“Nah, you damn sure ain’t that.”

“You know what, fuck you. You broke into my house demanding that I help you. I’m just trying to be nice regardless of the fact that you have no right to be here. You don’t have to be rude. In fact, you can leave.” She hopped up, causing the towel to fall to the floor. “Please go.”

“I’m not leaving. Not for a few days.”

“Then I’ll call the police and they can make you leave.”

The man wrapped his hand around the gun resting next to him. A gun McKenna had overlooked until his hand was wrapped around it.

“You sure about that?”

She sucked in a deep breath with her eyes quickly darting from the gun to his face. The calm, callous look he delivered had her rethinking.

“Now, for the next few days, I’m your guest. We can do this the easy way or the hard way but either way it’s happening. Understood?”

Her eyes landed on the gun again before she answered. “Understood.”

“Good, now give me a minute to wrap up a few things.”

“What?”

“Go to your room. We can talk when he leaves but I need to handle some things with Brooks before I send him home.”

Against her better judgment she stood, allowing her teeth to sink into her lip to avoid saying something that could backfire. Instead she turned on her heels, traveling through her home until she entered the bedroom, slamming the door right after. Her plan was to call the cops but when she went to grab her cellphone from the nightstand, she realized it was gone.

“Dammit. He took my phone,” she hissed, allowing her eyes to dart around the dark space.

She looked at the window wondering what her chances would be with that but closed her eyes feeling defeated knowing that wasn’t an option either. Although the neighborhood had been cleaned up some since crime had taken over years ago, there were still bars on all the bedroom windows as a precaution. After a few minutes she slumped onto the bed with the understanding that she was stuck with a stranger who had been shot but also had a gun and could shoot her too.
