“So tell me whatever it is and you can leave.” She shot him a nasty glare and crossed the living room heading to the kitchen, feeling his eyes on her. “And stop looking at my ass.”

Brooks chuckled. “If you don’t want people looking at your ass you might want to wear pants but you don’t have to worry about me. Carter would beat my ass if I touched you.”

“It’s my house and you’re not supposed to be here.”

“You got that.” She watched him lift a backpack from the sofa and bring it to the kitchen. While she dropped a pod in the Keurig, he tossed the bag on the counter.

“What’s that?”

“The message.”

She yanked the Keurig top down then reached for the backpack, unzipping one side. After peeking inside she shoved it back to him. “I don’t want his money.”

“That’s between you and Carter. He wants you to have it and asked me to bring it to you. He also said to tell you thank you.”

“I don’t want his money and he already told me thank you. You can leave and take that with you.” She pointed to the backpack, feeling disappointed and used. She’d spent three days with Carter and all he thought she was worth was a bag of money. Where others might have been honored, she felt dirty. In her opinion it was the equivalent of leaving money on the nightstand after sex.

“I can’t do that. He asked me to leave it with you and that’s what I’m doing. Whatever issues you have, take them up with him.”

She folded her arms across her chest. “I can’t exactly do that now, can I? He’s not the one here, you are. And since that’s the case I’m sure you’re aware I don’t know how to find him.”

“I don’t know anything but what he asked me to do. You be easy.”

Brooks turned to walk away but McKenna yanked up the backpack and followed him. Before he could get to the door, she cut off his path and shoved the money in his chest. “I said I don’t want it.”

“And I said that’s between you and him.”

“Take the money or I’m dumping it on the sidewalk and telling anybody who passes by that it’s a free gift from Carter Reed.”

Brooks cursed under his breath, knowing McKenna broadcasting their connection was the last thing Carter would want. And, it was the last thing she needed to do unless she wanted to get caught up in the bullshit that had just attached itself to Carter.

He grabbed the money and tossed it on the sofa, removing his phone to make a call. Carter answered on the first ring.

“Is it done?”

“Not exactly.” Brooks looked right at McKenna as he spoke to Carter.

“The fuck you mean not exactly.”

“She won’t take the money and if I leave it here she said she’s gonna dump every dollar on the sidewalk and broadcast that it’s from you.”

“Fuck,” Carter cursed and Brooks glared at McKenna.

“Exactly.”

Carter lived two lives. To the average person, his name wouldn’t mean much but to the people who truly knew who he was, McKenna would become a way to get to him.

“Let me speak to her.”

Brooks extended the phone to McKenna who accepted the device and turned her back when Carter spoke.

“Kenni, take the money.”

“I don’t want your money.”

“I know you don’t but you need it. Pay the back taxes on your house so you don’t lose it and put the rest in the bank a little at a time. Anything under ten grand.”

“I said I don’t want your money…”
