“What you want you can’t have and neither can I, especially not now.”

“You don’t know what I want, Carter.”

“You want me but that’s not an option. Take the money, Kenni. It’s the best I can do right now.”

“What’s wrong?”

“I fucked up. I focused on the players not the game and now shit is very complicated. It’s why I sent Brooks and didn’t come myself.”

She closed her eyes and admitted the real problem. It wasn’t about the money.

“You left.”

“You knew I would.”

“You could have at least said goodbye.”

“Nah, I couldn’t have. That wasn’t a good idea and neither is me talking to you now. Take the money, please. Forget the past three days and remember what I said. If he doesn’t make you a priority I’mma fix that shit for you.”

“How? You won’t know.”

“I’ll know.”

“So that’s it?”

We just move on like the last three days didn’t happen?

“That’s it.”

“But what if I can’t forget?” she asked quietly.

“Then you need to pretend like you do because I need to know that you’re living your life even if I can’t be a part of it.”

Her eyes closed slowly and she nodded. “I can do that.”

“Thank you.”

“Goodbye, Carter Reed.”

“See you around, Kenni.”

The line went quiet and when she looked at the screen, she realized the call had ended. After exhaling her disappointment she extended the phone back to Brooks and watched him leave.

Seated in a car nearby, Carter let his head fall back against the seat, while he waited for Brooks. The minute he filled the space next to him, Carter started the vehicle.

“You sure you don’t want to…”

“No.” Carter thought about his mother and the first thought he had was that he would not be his father. Time and space had made the decision for him. McKenna wouldn’t be safe in his world and he wouldn’t be safe in hers. At least not his heart.

So instead of considering all the what ifs, he pushed thoughts of her away and buried them somewhere deep, chambering the gun that rested in his lap. “Time to remind these niggas who I am.”

Carter had a kill list. Six names, then he was walking away for good.

Brooks nodded and grinned. “Let’s go fuck some shit up.”
