“Babe, you want to watch a movie while we eat?”

“Yeah, we can. I’m going to go change.” McKenna kissed Tevin on the cheek and left him in the living room, but the minute she pushed the door to her bedroom open, she froze. Something was off but instead of feeling afraid, her heart thumped with anticipation. Her eyes swept the room and nothing seemed out of place until she noticed something that hadn’t been there when she’d left for work that morning.

A cellphone was on her nightstand. A small, black flip phone that didn’t belong to her but she knew exactly how it got there.

“Babe, you want your food on a plate or you eating from the container like you normally do?”

McKenna lifted the phone and gripped it in her hands, startling when she heard Tevin’s voice again from her bedroom door.

“Babe, container or plate?”

“Uhh, container.” She tucked her hand behind her back and forced a smile. He returned a frown, searching her face.

“You okay? You look a little off.”

“I’m fine. Just ready to relax. I’ll be there in a minute. You can pick a movie.”

He smiled, shaking his head. “That’s a set up. I’ll pick one from your comfort list.”

Before she could respond he left the room and she hurried to the bathroom, gently closing the door and locking it. After turning on the faucet she sat on the corner of the tub and flipped the phone open. She pulled up the call log and there was one number listed. It wasn’t saved under a name, just the number.

She pressed send and held the phone to her ear. After the first ring he answered.

“Kenni…”

“Carter.” She said his name slowly on a shaky breath.

“You or Brooks?” she asked, curious about who’d left the phone.

“Brooks.”

“Oh…”

“It’s safer that way.” He sensed the disappointment in that one word and felt the need to explain but didn’t linger there and moved on. “He treating you right?”

“Yes.”

“I’m glad, Kenni. You should be happy.”

“What if I’m not?”

“Then try to be or I won’t be happy. He’s the kind of man you need.”

“Wasn’t it you who told me not to settle?”

“I did.”

“Then why should I settle?”

Tevin was nice. He had the potential to make her happy. He was also safe, but he wasn’t Carter.

“It’s not settling when what you want isn’t possible or good for you.”

“Shouldn’t that be my decision?”

“No, it shouldn’t.”

“Then what are you doing, Carter? Why leave the phone knowing I would use it.”
