“Damn,” I groaned to myself as Serena took center stage.

After the mating bite, Serena had become more gorgeous than I’d ever thought possible before. It was hardly possible for anyone in a room with her to take their eyes off her. She radiated beauty. And the dress she was in only accentuated her unrivaled looks.

A glittering dress, the same shade as our tracery. When the spotlight hit her, it was like she was a disco ball. The dress was tight, showing off all of her curves. I picked it out for her myself. Why not show off her new body?

It was also sleeveless, showing off how lean and toned the muscles in her arms had gotten since the bite. And backless, showing off the extensive tracery now adorning her skin. She looked perfect.

“This first song is an old favorite of mine,” Serena said into the microphone. Then she looked right at me in the back of the room. “And I’m dedicating it to a special person in my life.”

The room fell quiet as Serena launched into her first song. She sang about two star-crossed lovers who, against all odds, found their way to each other. Overcoming obstacle after obstacle and never losing hope or the love they had for each other.

The hypnotic melody of her singing hit my ears and all other thoughts and worries washed away. That was all I’d ever need to be happy. Her and her voice.

When it came to the Vinduthi mating bite, there was always a lot of talk about the physical changes. The mate gets the tracery. They grow stronger. Faster. More beautiful. All of that, I expected.

But there was so much more, and it only improved Serena’s act. She now sang louder and clearer. She hit higher notes than ever before, and she hit them for longer. She only needed to hit one note and the whole room was filled with the most enchanting sound in the galaxy.

And Serena didn’t let just her voice improve the show. Her newfound strength, speed, and dexterity added a whole new element.

The whole room applauded as Serena leaped off the stage and launched into her second song, all without missing a beat or stumbling. She landed perfectly on her high heels. She then effortlessly glided through the audience as she sang. It was a spectacle.

Just as Serena flawlessly moved back onto the stage, Draven slid his way into the booth with me. He looked at me with a huge smirk.

“So, how is mated life treating you?”

“Shh,” I responded. “Serena is singing, show some respect.”

“Right, of course,” Draven whispered. “I just?—”

“Watch the show, Draven. We can talk when her set is over.”

A moment later, Laux slid into the booth on the other side of me. “Serena has gotten really good. I remember when?—”

I simply shot Laux a glare and he got the message. He quickly decided to shut up. But then he looked past me to Draven.

“Yeah, he got mad at me for talking, too,” Dreven said.

“Shut up,” I grumbled.

“Can I at least talk if I’m ordering a drink?” Laux asked in a whisper. He then looked at a waitress walking past. “One ale.”

“Make it two,” Draven said.

Just then, Sakkar approached us at the booth. “Have you all ordered drinks yet or should I?—”

“Shut the fuck up,” I said in a low roar. “Serena is performing.”

Everyone fell silent again as I returned my attention to Serena’s beautiful rendition of a ballad about a battle centuries ago. Sakkar silently joined us in the booth, making sure not to even let the seat beneath him make a noise.

Not long after that, Thelev and Ryrik approached us. I kept my eyes on Serena and her performance. But in my peripherals, I saw Draven, Laux, and Sakkar all motioning for the pair to stay quiet.

Serena smiled at the cheering audience as her current song wound down. I clapped loudly, and the guys all joined in with me.

“Okay,” she said. “I’m going to take a brief intermission. But I promise all of you, I won’t leave you waiting long.” She then blew a kiss and disappeared behind the stage’s curtain.

“Now,” I declared. “Feel free to talk. What is it? I’m not so naïve as to think you all just decided to come support my mate tonight.”

“Well, it’d just been a minute since we all had the chance to meet up,” Draven said. “And it seemed long overdue, especially after everything with Laxon.”
