“And,” Laux added. “We figured you wouldn’t be happy to be dragged away from your new mate for a meeting. Coming here, we knew she’d at least be busy so you could talk.”

“Fine. Then let’s talk,” I said. “Quickly, before her show starts up again.”

“Well, it seems worth it to give you all an update in person on the search for Laxon.” Draven quickly looked around to make sure we weren’t being listened to. “We have all our resources looking for the bastard. But it seems he is still in the wind. No one has seen him since our last encounter.”

“That’s good, right?” Ryrik chimed in. “It means the fucker is scared. He’s hiding from us.”

“That could be it,” I said, keeping a close eye on the time. Serena’s intermissions never lasted more than ten minutes. “Or it could be that he’s planning something. Biding his time to strike against us. The trouble could be far from over.”

“And signs seem to be pointing to that,” Draven agreed. “The other thing you all need to be made aware of is that Erznet was found dead.”

“What?” My attention was ripped from the time. “When? How?”

“He was found this morning, dead in an alley by one of our guys following a lead on Laxon. We can only assume Laxon killed him.”

“To keep him quiet,” Sakkar said.

“Yeah, but keep him quiet about what?” I asked.

Erznet didn’t seem to know anything about the larger plan Laxon plotted. But he must have known something, or else why would Laxon bother to silence him? There must be something larger going on, and we all needed to keep an eye out.

“That’s exactly what I’m wondering,” Draven responded. “We are still looking for Laxon, so we might catch him before it becomes an issue. But I just thought you all needed to know.”

With the meeting concluded, the others all got up and out of the booth to return to their own lives and responsibilities. But I stayed firmly planted in my seat, waiting for Serena to take the stage again.

But once she did, for the first time since the mating bite, I couldn’t focus on just her. My mind kept racing. Laxon was still out there plotting against us. And I mistook a real lead, Erznet, as some joker who knew nothing.

If something ended up happening to Serena at the hands of Laxon, it would be hard to see it as anything but my fault. I thought the danger would be all behind us. But it seemed more and more likely that it was only the beginning.

“So?”

I snapped back to reality to find Serena standing before me. She was still in her performance dress and looked as beautiful as ever.

“What did you think of the show?” she continued.

“Absolutely perfect. Your best show yet.”

“Really?” A huge smile broke out on her face.

“Yes, really.”

Serena then climbed into the booth with me. She draped her legs over me and sat in my lap. She wasted no time in planting a big kiss on my lips.

I let myself melt into her for a moment. Where her singing failed, her touch succeeded. My thoughts left Laxon and returned to being of nothing but of her.

But I knew that Laxon would not be able to leave my mind for long. With him still free on Thodos III, he would continue to present a danger to Serena. And I could not let that stand.

I would never stop looking for Laxon. I would follow every lead, no matter how thin. I would take any chance available to track the bastard down. If Laxon ever stuck his head out of hiding, I’d be there waiting for him.

I’d do that all for Serena. All to protect her and make sure her life was full of nothing but happiness and love. She deserved that much, and so much more.

“I love you,” Serena whispered as she kissed me deeper. Her hands wrapped around my body and ran through my hair.

“I love you, too.” My hands gripped her hips as I kissed her back.

Part of me couldn’t help but hope we’d never find Laxon. That he actually escaped Thodos III altogether with no plans of returning. As much as I wanted to bash his skull in, I’d also settle for never seeing or hearing from him again.

All so Serena and I could keep living like this. Happy and together. Forever.
