“I left to go to the army because I couldn’t take the lies or the betrayal my family was going through. Money was the main source of all the problems, and Brielle was the root of most of it.” I continued listening to him as he explained.

“My mother’s parents are dead, but my father’s are very much alive, living in wealth somewhere in Bora Bora. They despised their son for marrying a woman like her, who was a manipulative gold digger, but… they still had a little love for their grandchildren, who had to live with it all. They favored Brielle the most because, well.. she’s the youngest and put a bank account under her name so she could have it when she got older.” I watched as tears came to his eyes, but he quickly blinked them away.

“Brielle wasn’t meant to live in poverty, and God, I regret leaving her alone to fend for herself every single day.”

“What happened to the money?” I questioned, and he looked up at me as if he didn’t think I was actually listening.

“My parents and Marissa… Since the moment my father was informed that Brielle had money stored in the bank for her, they hated her with a passion.. even as their own baby. Once Marissa was old enough to know, she hated her too. I was the one taking care of her. Helping with her homework, ensuring she got to and from school safely, doing most of the things parents should do with their children… When I left to go to the army, everything went downhill, and no one was there for her. She had no idea of the money, and my parents made sure to keep it that way because once she turned eighteen, it would all belong to her. They’d been working for years to get into the bank account so they could obtain the money, and sadly enough, they succeeded.” He stopped talking for a moment and closed his eyes.

“Is that why they all abandoned her?” I asked him, and he ran his hand through his hair.

“They took everything, leaving her all by herself just because they were jealous of her inheritance. Left a year before it was all hers, and she knew nothing about it.. They forced me to stay away from her because if not, they would try everything in their power to ensure Marissa could take Delilah away from Brielle. In return for my staying away, Brielle can continue raising Delilah, and they send me money for my silence and compliance.”

“But Marissa went off on her own. It looks like she wants to obtain custody of Delilah.” I revealed, and he sighed.

“She wants our parents to get involved. She wants this to escalate, but now that she’s done this, they can’t technically keep me away from Brielle or silence me. They violated our agreement.” He shrugged, and I thought to myself for a moment.

“Did your grandparents leave anything to you or Marissa?”

“They did.. but it wasn’t as much as what Brielle inherited. I didn’t really care for it, so when my parents took the money out of my account, I didn’t see the difference, as it just made me hate them more. Marissa doesn’t like that Brielle has the overall favoritism, and neither do my parents..” He explained, and I looked down at my watch, noticing it was time for me to start returning to the office.

Taking my card out, I handed it to him. “Here’s my card. Contact me in a few days or just come to my office.. not like you’ll have trouble finding it..”

“Why do you say that?” He asked, taking it, and I looked at the picture of my license plate on his wall. His eyes followed my gaze, and he ignored the photograph as he turned back to me.

“I’ll contact you before stopping by.”

“I’d appreciate it if you did,” I muttered. As I made my way out, I stopped by the stairs and glanced back at him.

“Just off the top of your head… would you have any idea of how much money Brielle had stored for her? Before they took it all..” I questioned nonchalantly, and he stared blankly into my eyes before responding.

“$25 million.”

Brielle

Walking into the building, I made my way to the elevator, and before the doors closed, I jumped as a hand was placed right in the middle. They opened back up, and I was met with a tall man in a black suit with an emotionless face. He stepped into the elevator, and the doors closed. Looking over at him discreetly, I noticed his earpiece had KR Inc. written in white.

“..Y-you must be Nathan..” I said softly, and he gave me one stiff nod. I nodded awkwardly as he said nothing else, and the doors opened. He waited for me to step out, and I did with him hot on my trail. Even with my heels, I only barely reached his shoulder. We made our way to the conference room, and I opened the door to find a group of men in suits sitting around the table.

‘When will the women ever show up in one of these things?’I thought to myself, but I quickly smiled as I erased all negative thoughts while I went over to the head of the table.

“Good afternoon, everyone.. Sorry for the delay. Mr. Russel had some emergency matters to attend to and has asked me to fill in for him today.” I informed, and the atmosphere was rather uncomfortable, to say the least. I could clearly see that more than half of the men were not paying attention to me, more so to what was behind me. I turned around to see Nathan giving daggers to everyone in the room.

Placing my hand on my hip, I spoke. “Are you going to do this all day?” I asked, and he broke eye contact with the men at that table as he looked down at me, still remaining silent.

I sighed and pointed to the chair in the corner of the room. The only person I ever had authority over was Delilah. So now, if he doesn’t want to cooperate or speak, he can become a five-year-old since that’s what he’s acting like.

“Go sit down and do what you’re doing in the corner,” I ordered, and he didn’t say anything. He simply stared at me, almost confused. I narrowed my eyes and took one step as I dropped my hand from my waist but kept the hand that was pointing up.

“Go sit down,” I demanded once again. He finally opened his mouth, ready to speak, but I held my hand up to stop him.

“You had your chance. Go.” He looked at me for a bit longer before turning and walking over to the corner to take a seat. I turned back to the men to see them shocked, but they quickly masked it. Clearing my throat, I picked up my iPad and connected it to the projector.

“Now, since that’s out of the way, we can-” I began but halted when I noticed one of the men trying to mask his laughter as he shook his head in disbelief.

“Is something amusing about the presentation I prepared for today, sir?” I asked, and he cleared his throat with a smile still on his face.

“Nothing is funny, Ms. Newman.. It’s just adorable to see you walk around the room like some big boss. Though I appreciate your effort, it’s cute.” He laughed, making some of the other men chuckle lowly. I could see Nathan ready to retaliate, but I placed my iPad down on the table and pointed to the other corner of the room.
