“Since it’s so funny, now you get to sit in the corner, too.” They all went silent, and the man chuckled, seeing my threat as harmless.

“Seriously? I’m not going to-”

“We have a lot of work to get done today, sir, and I’d like to return to Mr. Russel with a full report. If not, your name will be the first on the list for his monthly job terminations. And even though I may not be the ‘big boss,’ I can certainly convince him to terminate disrespectful and arrogant subordinates.” The man quickly stood up and walked over to the corner to take a seat. I picked up my iPad again and looked at their pale faces around the room.

“Is there anyone else who’d like to join them?” I asked innocently, to which they all shook their heads as I smiled.

“Alright, well, let’s get started.”

Chapter forty

Brielle

I finished putting away my things as all the men walked out of the room except for Nathan, who sat in the corner angrily. The meeting was an overall success, and I didn’t even have to give any more time-outs. Looking through my notes, I heard Nathan speak for the first time today.

“Ms. Newman?” He began in a rather deep voice, and I hummed softly in response as I continued what I was doing. “Hmm?”

“….Am I allowed to get up now?” He asked, and I nodded as I looked over my shoulder at him.

“Yes, you are.” He stood up quickly and glared at the chair as he walked away. I giggled at him and heard my phone ring. Picking it up, I saw it was Madam A.

“Hi, Madam A, how are you?”

“I’m doing great, sweetheart. How are you?”She asked, and I could tell she was overly cheerful for some reason.

I smiled. “I’m doing wonderful. It’s been a while since we’ve spoken.”

“Almost a day, to be exact, but that’s not important. I wanted to know if you wanted me to go grocery shopping with you for Thanksgiving. I have nothing to do today anyways and wondered if you wouldn’t mind me tagging along.”

“Yes! Oh my God, I’ve been meaning to call you about that. I still don’t even know what we need.”

“Oh, I have a list right here,” she replied, and I furrowed my eyebrows but rolled my eyes once she spoke again. “Mmm, thank you, Benjamin. It smells wonderful.” I heard her sigh contentfully as she smelt whatever he had given her.

“Why are you in Killian’s home?”

“I’m here visiting my granddaughter.. and by the looks of things, it seems like it’s your home as well.”A slight blush rose to my cheeks as I grabbed my bag.

“…What do you mean?” I asked, and she responded.

“Well, Delilah has informed me that you no longer sleep in your room.. you sleep in Killy’s room now.”She clarified before taking a sip of whatever she was drinking.“Care to explain?”

I shrugged as Nathan held the door open for me, and I walked out. “We’ve.. just gotten a bit more comfortable, and I sleep better with him..”

She hummed. “Right, right. I’m sure that’s the only reason you sleep in his room.”I rolled my eyes again and stepped into the elevator with Nathan beside me.

“What time do you want to go?”

“Whenever you’re free. We’ll be bringing Delilah along, too, if you don’t mind... I promised her already.”She confessed, and I laughed.

“I can ask Killian to let me off a little earlier so we can go.”

“I’m sure you’ll be able to convince him…”I scoffed as the doors opened, and a man with blonde hair and blue eyes entered. Nathan quickly tensed up, but I ignored him.

“What do you mean by that?” I asked her, and she giggled.

“I mean, you have a rather.. effective way of persuading him to do things for you..”I was about to say something when Nathan quickly went around me and grabbed the man by the neck. I turned to him in shock and lowered the phone as he pushed the man against the elevator wall.

The veins in Nathan’s arm and face showed how enraged he was, and the man, in contrast, had veins show because of his increasingly alarming lack of oxygen.
