“I would think you would come to your senses and realize that we’ve known each other for very little time. Why are you so keen on getting me to marry you?” She questioned as he tilted his head.

“I think I’ve made it quite clear that I want to be with you. I’m not looking for a short-term commitment, Brielle.”

“That doesn’t mean me being your wife is the alternative. I don’t know if you even-” She began and stopped talking before she said something out of impulse.

Killian took notice of how quickly she cut off her sentence but remained impassive as he continued. “What if I did ask you to marry me?” He questioned.

“I don’t know what I would say or do. You’re the only person I’ve ever been with. Am I only going to be with one man my entire life?” She asked, and Killian chuckled at her statement as he poured himself another glass of wine.

“You really think I’d allow you to see other men who won’t treat you how you deserve to be treated? That’s amusing.” Her eyebrows furrowed as she stared at him, and he continued.“If you don’t recall, you are under contract, Brielle.”

“Are you being serious, Killian?” She asked, and he shrugged.

“I should be asking you the same thing, Brielle.. you signed it. What part about you belongs to me, don’t you understand..”

“So what you mean to tell me is that my employment contract extends beyond the office to the point where you think you own my decisions and choices, that you essentially own me?”

“...You don’t think I own you, Brielle?” He asked, narrowing his eyes slightly. Brielle stared at him emotionlessly as the waiters brought over the appetizers. Silently, she looked away from him, and after a moment or so, he noticed she was ignoring him.

“Is there something you’re gaining from this silent treatment behavior?” He questioned, and she continued to ignore him. He scoffed at her and laughed as humorlessly as he could.

“God, Brielle. You’re really something, aren’t you.” He stared at her, and she continued eating as if he wasn’t there. He didn’t touch his food as he continued staring her down.

“Are you going to say anything to me?” He asked her, and she was still silent.

“Are you expecting some sort of apology?” He pressed further, trying to get an answer, but she simply looked up at him and stared before going back to her food.

He didn’t move his eyes off of her, but he noticed something, or rather someone, behind her. He looked to the back of the restaurant, only to see someone in a hoodie looking at him directly. The man went into the bathroom, and Killian already knew who it was. He stood up, and Brielle finally glanced over at him.

“If you’ll excuse me, I’ll be right back,” He stated, walking away from her, not waiting for a response. He opened the door to the bathroom and saw Eugene standing in the middle of the floor with his hood off.

“I thought I told you to inform me when you would come to see me and to call in advance as well?” Killian seethed, and Eugene shrugged. “I guess I didn’t get the memo.”

“How the hell did you get in here?”

“Does it really matter?” Eugene asked, and Killian crossed his arms.

“Yes, it most certainly does. Because I am present, the restaurant has maximum security, and the fact that you just waltzed into the bathroom makes me suspicious.”

“It doesn’t matter how I got in. It matters why I’m here.”

“Eugene. As you can most likely tell, this is not a good time to talk. At all. Call me if you want to speak, but I’m in the middle of something right now.” Eugene sighed as he nodded his head. Killian walked towards the door without saying goodbye, but Eugene spoke again.

“She already knows you are in control. If you weren’t, she and Delilah wouldn’t be here. There’s no need to keep emphasizing that.. If you apologize like a normal person, I’m sure she’ll stop ignoring you.”

Benjamin flashed another card for Delilah to read, and she looked at it for a while, trying to put the letters together. He would often teach her something every day to ensure she wasn’t home doing nothing, and gradually, the few minutes a day they spent reviewing slowly turned to hours as if she were in school. She tilted her head as she was getting more confused by the minute.

“Spell it out for me,” Benjamin encouraged her, and Delilah nodded.

“B-e-c-a-u-s-e.”

“Correct. Now, try to remember what it is and sound it out in your head. We went over it yesterday.” Nodding her head, Delilah stared at the word for a bit longer before speaking.

“Because?”

“That’s right.” Benjamin smiled, and she clapped her hands happily. Looking down at his watch, he noticed it was time for dinner.

“We’ll continue tomorrow. It’s time for dinner.” Delilah nodded and grabbed his hand as he stood up. Walking over to the dining room, he sat her in her chair and gave her the plate of macaroni, broccoli, and chicken fingers with a cup of apple juice.
