After she finished eating, Benjamin took her upstairs to get her ready for bed. After being bathed, dressed, and fed for the night, Delilah sat at her window seat and stared outside as Benjamin finished tidying up.

He went over to her and spoke. “Are you ready for bed, little one?”

She shrugged. “I’m not tired.”

“Well, I think Mummy and Daddy would be pleased if you were in bed fast asleep.” She nodded her head, but she didn’t move. She wanted to tell Brielle how she’d been feeling lately, but every time she thought about it, it made her scared of the possible reaction.

Benjamin kneeled beside her. “Have you not told Mummy how you feel yet?” Delilah shook her head as she forcefully held back the tears that wanted to surface.

“I’m s-still scared of w-what she will say.” Benjamin held her hand in his own, feeling for the little girl who would casually tell him about her worries and anxieties.

“Sweetheart, you have nothing to worry about. Mummy will be happy you got the courage to tell her. She would never be upset with you.” She looked over at him as she sniffled softly.

“Y-you promise r-right?” Benjamin nodded his head, and Delilah let out a shaky breath and spoke again. “Can I stay up a little late tonight?”

Benjamin raised an eyebrow before speaking. “Can I ask why?”

She sighed. “I.. I think I want to tell her.”

Chapter forty-five

Brielle

Killian held the door open for me as he walked me out of the restaurant. I gave him a tight-lipped smile to say ‘thank you,’ and he placed his arm around my waist. After the whole incident while we were eating, he sort of ‘apologized’ for how he had been acting before, and I accepted it as I knew it was the best I was getting from him.

He called George to bring the car, and I started feeling a little chilly as we waited. I wrapped my arms around myself to give me some sort of warmth as I leaned in closer to him. He looked down at me and tsked as he pulled away. I was momentarily confused, but I gave him another smile as he removed his suit jacket and placed it around my shoulders. I held it closer, and he pulled me back to his side.

“Thank you… You really didn’t need to.” He looked down at me and pushed the hair out of my face.

“If I didn’t, it would make me seem like more of a dick than I already am.” I giggled at his choice of words, and he placed a small kiss on my forehead. Running my hand over his shoulder, I felt him melt a bit under my touch.

I often noticed when he did this sort of thing, and it made me feel all giddy inside most of the time. Just knowing that I was his sense of comfort, his sense of ease.. made me love him even more than I already did, even if he tended to be rather arrogant, nonsensical, and crude.

Soon, we arrived at the penthouse, and I quickly made my way up as it was getting colder by the minute. The elevator doors opened, and I walked in with Killian trailing behind me. I went to the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water as he took a seat on the bar stool. Grabbing a cup for Delilah, I went upstairs and opened her door slowly to see her light was off. As she was lying in her bed, fast asleep, I smiled as I placed the water on her bedside and sat on the edge next to her.

Running my hair over her messy curls softly, my heart practically leaped out of my chest as her head turned abruptly, and her eyes were wide awake.

“Hi,” she spoke, and I placed my hand over my heart while exhaling loudly as she sat up slowly. I looked back at her to see her with a small smile on her face.

“Baby, you can’t scare me like that..” I said, and she tilted her head just a bit.

“Sorry…” I took off Killian’s jacket and placed it on the end of the bed.

“It’s alright.. I just want to know why you’re up so late. It’s past your bedtime.” She timidly placed her hands in her lap, and I could see she was struggling to make eye contact.

“I-I was waiting for you to come back.. I um-” She didn’t say anything as she stared directly into my eyes. I frowned and inched closer to her. Placing my hand on the side of her face, I rubbed her cheek.

“Are you okay, baby? Is there something wrong?” She stared into my eyes, and I heard Killian’s long strides coming up the stairs. His footsteps stopped at the door, and Delilah looked over at him briefly before returning to me. He walked away, a bit slower this time, and I waited for Delilah to speak as she opened her mouth.

“I-I want…” She stopped and looked down. I lifted her head slightly and again made eye contact with her glossy blue eyes.

She continued, “I-I want you to be my mommy.” I felt my heart beat out of my chest, and tears immediately sprung to my eyes. I masked my pain with a smile as she spoke again.

“A-all the girls in the dance studio have their own mommy and daddy and… I don’t. I-I always thought you were my mommy b-but…” She said, trailing off, and I couldn’t help the heavy tears that fell down my face. The smile I had was slowly breaking down.

“A-are you mad at me?” She asked me as she grabbed my hand, which made me cry even more. The fact that she would think I would be mad at her for confessing how she really felt made my heart clench. I shook my head, and a struggling smile came to my face, making me look even more insane.

I heard Killian enter the room, and he sat beside me and rubbed my leg. After a few moments of trying not to cry even more, I wiped my tears and looked over to my little baby, who was waiting anxiously for my response. I picked her up from the bed and sat her on my lap.
