“I don’t fucking care if it will take longer than usual! I need it to be ready by the time I arrive. I have to return to the States in less than six days and leave again a week later. I didn’t buy six $30 million private jets so they could catch dust, and I couldn’t fucking use them. If I can’t use one, make sure the other one is fucking operating. If I get there and one of them is not ready, I will end your career, and that business will be as good as mine.” He ended the phone call and walked over to me. He placed his hand on the small of my back and pulled me with him as he walked towards the elevator. Benjamin placed the suitcases inside and looked at me sympathetically.

As he passed me, he whispered, “Give him some time and try not to aggravate him much.” I nodded in response and stepped into the elevator. Killian followed me, and as the doors closed, Benjamin nodded at us before walking away. I looked up at Killian and noticed that he was highly irritated. I lowered my gaze and gently brushed some hair off Delilah’s face as she slept soundly.

Her birthday was just a few weeks away, and I still hadn’t planned anything special for her. She was not even five years old yet, but she seemed so mature for her age. Just thinking about it makes me emotional to see how much she understands and how observant she is. It’s almost rare for children under five who can do as many things as her.

The elevator doors opened, and George quickly rushed in and grabbed the suitcases. Exiting the building, we walked to the car and sat in the backseat. I fastened the seatbelt for both Delilah and myself as she tightly held onto my shirt, indicating she wouldn’t leave my side anytime soon. George started the car, and I faced Killian.

“Any particular reason why we had to leave for London in the middle of the night?” I asked, and he glanced at me before returning to his phone.

“Blaine informed me that Calvin was already attempting to send some of his men to infiltrate my buildings, and unfortunately, not a single person over there is competent enough to put a stop to it.” I remained silent as he practically fumed, and I brushed a few hairs from Delilah’s face. This would be our first time on an airplane, and though I wasn’t entirely terrified, I was slightly afraid. I could only hope Delilah would be calm throughout the ride.

Killian’s phone rang, and he picked it up. “What do you want?” He muttered and paused for a second before groaning.

“How is it that you’re the one who told me we had to leave for London, and your ass is not even close to the airport?” Blaine, I’m assuming, spoke to Killian once again, and he rolled his eyes.

“I’ll have them prepare one of your jets when I arrive.” He hung up the phone and checked his watch for the time.

“You’ll have less than a few hours to settle in and rest when we arrive. We have a few meetings to attend and preparations for events to finalize.”

I nodded my head. “What about Delilah? If Benjamin’s not coming with us, who’s watching her?”

“Darling, I have butlers worldwide. Ironically, some of them may be related to him, though many are not. We’ll have someone to watch her.” Nodding silently, I looked back out the window. After a few minutes, we arrived at the airport and drove into the lot by the runways. Looking out of the windows, I could see other planes in the distance, either leaving, getting ready to depart, or just returning.

The car came to a halt, and George courteously opened the door for us. As we stepped out, I adjusted Delilah on my hip and gazed up at the private jet that had an elegant black exterior and a giant white KR Inc. sign prominently displayed on its door.

Glancing over to Killian, who was speaking to a few people, I approached him slowly. “Blaine Porter will be here in less than ten minutes. Make sure his jet is ready within five. Are the captain and flight attendants ready to go?” One of the men nodded his head, and the jet’s door lowered.

George walked up the stairs and placed our bags inside as Killian wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me with him. We entered inside, and my eyes widened slightly as I noted the interior’s rather expensive and unnecessary elements. Sitting in one of the chairs as Killian sat across me, I fastened my seatbelt with Delilah on my lap.

“Flight attendants, prepare for take-off please. All passengers, please take your seats. You will be able to stand once the sign is no longer blinking…” He went on to talk about a few more safety precautions, and I listened while Killian paid no mind to them as he’d probably heard it all before.

Soon, I felt the plane move, and I squeezed Delilah slightly as well as the armrest on the chair as I closed my eyes tightly. After a few moments, I felt nothing as we were in the air, and I opened my eyes to look out the window into the night sky. Looking over at Killian, he remained silent as he kept his eyes trained on me. After a few seconds, he averted his eyes away from me and pulled a tray table from the wall to place his belongings and laptop. I released the seat belt, and Delilah squirmed in my arms, indicating discomfort.

Killian gestured towards the back. “There’s another section of the plane towards the back. You can lay her on one of the chair beds.” As I nodded, I lifted her in my arms and walked towards the back. Once there, I looked around before gently laying her on the couch near the window. I then removed her coat and shoes and placed them to the side. After covering her with a soft blanket, I leaned down and gave her forehead a gentle kiss.

As I walked towards the front, I began taking off my coat. I placed it on one of the chairs and walked over to my bag. Grabbing one of my books, I went to return to my seat after I picked up a blanket from the nearby shelf in case I got cold. As I sat down, I turned to the page where I had left off.

It was one of the new romance novels the library had received, and the male love interest reminded me so much of a.. certain person. In the past, I would rarely read any type of romance novel because of how they made me feel. But ever since I met Killian, they’re almost all I read now. I ordered a few online and even borrowed some from Mr. Burkley’s library. But I had to pace myself before I dived straight into the deliciously tempting dark romance section: baby steps, Brielle, baby steps.

As I read the female character’s depiction of the man as she gazed at him passionately, I bit my lip and discreetly looked over to see Killian moving oddly similarly.

As she watched him take off his suit jacket, my face flushed as I watched Killian do the same. As the male character rolled up his sleeves, I gulped, trying to focus my attention back on the book, but it was hard to look away as they practically mirrored one another.

This had to be just a coincidence.. right?Killian pulled his tie off, and my mouth went dry as my face continued to burn. As the male character in the book started unbuttoning a few of his first buttons, I slammed the book shut and stood to limit the amount of unconventional mirroring that would continue. As stupid as it sounded, I didn’t want to start mirroring the female character as well...

Killian looked over at me instantly, and I cleared my throat as I went towards the back to grab a glass of water. As I returned, my heart sank as he was thankfully still clothed, but he was now flipping through the book. One of his fingers thoughtfully held where I’d left off, but his other fingers danced along the pages thoughtfully, and he clenched his jaw slightly with every paragraph he skimmed.

Did I fail to mention this book was in the rather... adult section of the library? The section I was now regretting attempting to dip my toe into as my boss took it upon himself to read it out of curiosity. Approaching him as my face was still red, he glanced up at me for a moment and slowly handed the book to me.

Skimming his eyes up and down my frame, he spoke, muttering the last part of his sentence so I couldn’t hear him completely. “I didn’t mean to intrude..just wanted to see what I’m up against..”

Chapter seventeen

Brielle

After about five hours, we arrived in London. Delilah had woken up earlier, and we ate the breakfast the flight attendants had served us. Surprisingly, she wasn’t afraid of the plane. She was bubbly and happy the rest of the way.

Stepping out of the aircraft as I carried her, I looked around and took in my surroundings. Killian, standing beside me, greeted a man with a white buttoned-up shirt, a jean jacket, black fitted jeans, and a warm smile, reminding me of George.
