“I know for a fact that I didn’t hire a fucking idiot. So brief me, what’s so difficult about following instructions?” I placed the files on his desk, and he glanced at me before returning to his call. We were back in New York, and everything was back the way it had been. Well, as much as it could be.

From the night at the charity event to the night of our last day in London, we hadn’t truly addressed the growing attraction or acts of intimacy.. or rather, each time he looked prepared to speak to me about it, I always found an excuse to be busy or to leave the room.

Since returning, I went back to organizing and planning everything daily in my office. Killian was back to cursing out all of his employees, and Benjamin was now caring for Delilah. The same happened to George, who returned to being our regular driver. And we can’t forget Blaine, who was now back and being… well, himself.

It was slightly upsetting to say goodbye to Reginald and Leo. Even though we had spent less than a week together, it felt like forever. We’d grown to learn so much about one another. Delilah had given Reginald a well-deserved hug and did the same for Leo before a cute little pout was set on her face.

When I said goodbye to them, I swore I saw a small tear form in Reginald’s eye, but he masked it quickly. I had started to feel somewhat sad for him, but when he whispered that they would visit in a few weeks for Delilah’s birthday, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. As for Killian, he bid goodbye and walked away without any emotion, which informed me that he was easing back into his regular temperament.

I checked the time and saw that it was already 2 PM. Standing up from my desk, I grabbed my purse and left my office. Killian immediately snapped his eyes over to me.

“Where are you going?” He asked, and I cleared my throat as I turned to him. In addition to his somewhat standoffish behavior and normal temperament, he has been acting rather.. possessive ever since that night. Maybe I was imagining it, but his eyes looked at me a bit hungrily. Almost as if he wanted to devour me.Not that I would have much of an objection to that.

“O-out for my lunch break,”I answered, and he continued.

“The break room is down the hall. I don’t think you’ll need your purse for that short of a trip.” He argued, looking at a few files scattered on his desk, and I bit my lip.

“I’m going out, Mr. Russel,” I said, emphasizing my words.

He responded, looking up at me. “Where?”

“To the new little coffee shop around the corner...”

“There’s a much better coffee machine in the break room, which I’m sure you’re aware of.”

“Killian, I’ll be back in about 20 minutes.” He stared at me for a few seconds, and there was now a dark look in his eyes as if he was daring me to defy him. It was almost as if our night together had awakened something in him, as cliche as it sounded.

I bit my lip as I inched my way to the door slowly. He stared at me for a little longer before pushing himself out of his chair and marching over to me. I squealed as I opened his door and hurried over to the elevator as quickly as possible. I pressed the button to go down multiple times and looked over my shoulder to see him rounding the corner.

The doors opened, and I went in as fast as possible and started pressing the 1st floor like a maniac. I could see Anna at her desk, trying to stifle a laugh, and Killian walking closer and closer. Before he could come in, the doors closed, and I sighed in relief. I knew he’d be furious when I returned, but I wanted some time for myself. The elevator doors opened, and I walked out and rang George.

“Hello, Ms. Newman.”

I stepped out of the building and walked towards the car. “Hi, George. I need a ride to a new coffee shop that has just opened, please.” I could hear him getting up, but he paused before answering.

“Does sir know about this departure?” He asked with an unnoticeable tremble in his voice.

“George?”

“Yes, miss?”

“Take me to the coffee shop, please.”

“Of course, miss.” He exited the car and opened the back door for me. I thanked him as I sat down, and he closed my door. The car pulled off, and I heard a ringtone in my purse. I opened it and saw that Killian was calling.

Answering the phone, I held it to my ear. “Hello?” I said, and he sighed on the other line.

“Darling, why are you going out for coffee when there are luxury appliances here at the office? I even stay stocked up on your favorite creamer,” he urged, trying to convince me, and I rolled my eyes at his antics. Something in my mind told me he didn’t care about what coffee I drank. He just didn’t want me out of his sight, which I learned on the trip to London.

“Bye, Killian,” I said, smiling, and I ended the call. He instantly called me back, and I answered once again.

“Brielle.. did you just hang up on me?”He asked, and I could feel the venom in his voice coming through the phone. I hung up again, and he called back even quicker. I answered again, and before I even said hello, he had already spoken over the phone.

“Hang up the phone one more time, Brielle-” He seethed into the phone, and I ended the call. George looked back for a split second and returned to looking at the road.

“Miss… I wouldn’t hang up on him in that manner if I were you.” I shrugged.

“How else am I going to be able to go different places without him? He needs to know that I can ignore him.” George chuckled as he parked, and I knew he didn’t believe me for a second. And as sad as it sounded, I didn’t believe myself either. He held the door open for me, and I exited the car. Upon entering the shop, I noticed it was packed, and there were no vacant tables.
