The baby had cried for the first time yesterday, and I was so happy. The nurse told me that since her body was adjusting to being out of the womb, she would be occupied with trying to breathe on her own rather than crying.

She took her first few breaths yesterday, which helped her prepare for her ear-screeching cries. I didn’t mind it, though, as I got to hold her for the first time, and it felt magical…But I wasn’t feeling that magic right now.

Finally placing the crib in the room, I huffed and pointed to the incubator as I shook my head.

“You see what you do to me? Tragic.”

Looking at my list, I crossed the crib off. I got bottles, clothes, toys, a stroller, diapers, formula, drawers, baby powder, throw blankets, and a crib that left my back feeling twisted. I still had more to go with the list, but I was making progress… slowly but surely. I had saved some of the money just in case, but the rest was just for her. I sat on the chair as I huffed, and the door opened. Harrison walked into the room and looked around as he chuckled.

“I leave for not even four days, and you go off and buy all this even without the court’s final decision.”

“I have faith in you, Harry. That’s all I really need.” I admitted tiredly, and he shook his head as he opened his briefcase. Picking up a stack of papers, he handed them to me. As I took them, I turned over to the first page as he spoke.

“Be glad you are now the legal guardian of this baby and that you didn’t buy any of this for no reason.” Placing the papers down as tears came to my eyes, I stood up and gave him another hug as the weight had finally been lifted from my shoulders. He hugged me back and patted my back awkwardly after a few seconds.

“I don’t know how to respond. You’re not letting go.” I laughed at him and smiled as I pulled away.

“Thank you so much, Harrison.”

“You are very welcome. It looks like you’re going to do just fine—probably better than I will do with my future kids, but hey, only time will tell.” I giggled at him and walked over to the incubator.

“.. What are you thinking of naming her?” He asked beside me, and I sighed as I watched her little face scrunch adorably.

“…Delilah.”

Walking into the house, I went upstairs and placed Delilah on a blanket on my bed. After three long weeks of being in the hospital, I was finally free. Harrison had some connections, as always, and had people drop off the baby’s things from the hospital. But I haven’t unpacked everything since Mr. Burkley gave me a suggestion that I think I might take.

He advised me a little apartment rather than this huge house would make me feel more at home with Delilah, and I agreed with him. He found me a few already, and if I’m approved, in a week or two, we should be able to sleep there, and in a month, everything should be moved. Selling this house to the bank should make life easier, though I doubt I would get anything out of it as it was still under my parent’s name.

After I finished placing all my things away, I walked over to the bed and watched as she lay peacefully. Tears came to my eyes as I was happy to have someone with me who was family, even if they couldn’t sit up straight. Seeing her made me forget everybody else.

Her face twisted and turned, and eventually, her eyes opened for the first time. My heart clenched as I was the first to see her beautiful eyes. She looked up at me in awe, and I softly placed my hand on her little stomach, to which she smiled and wiggled around. I put my finger in her hand, and she grabbed it as she gave it a little squeeze.

“My little pumpkin..” I whispered and wiped a tear. “I will never let you go. I won’t allow anyone to hurt you, and I’ll always be there for you… I promise.”

Present

I walked into Brielle’s dance studio and looked around. It was about 7 PM, and I found out that she and Delilah came by to see the girls and finish what they’d been working on for a showcase Brielle mentioned a while ago. It was Monday, and I gave her the day off as she woke up in my arms this morning in almost a panting sweat and hadn’t spoken to me all day. Going over to the front desk, I paused when I heard a few gasps. Looking over my shoulder for a split second, I smirked as three girls in their teens tried to make it discreet that they were looking.

“That’s Bri’s boyfriend,” I chuckled.Boyfriend… cute.

“She’s so lucky.” Another one whispered, and I rang the little bell once. I heard their feet approach me, and they started arguing about who should speak. I glanced back at them again, and two of them pushed the other in front, making her cheeks go red in embarrassment.

“Why, hello, girls.” I gave them a smile for my amusement, and all three of them looked nervous as they smiled back.

“H-Hi, Mr. Russel,” The one in the front said.

“If you don’t mind me asking, are you in a relationship with Bri?” Another one asked, and the girl next to her gave her a small swat on the arm, but it was clear she wanted to know, too.

“Mmm, something like that,” I responded. The three of them looked very excited, but the color from their faces drained as we heard two bangs of a stick.

“I know for a fact you girls aren’t wasting this man’s precious time. Why aren’t you in class?” The three of them dashed towards the back so she wouldn’t reach them, and Madam Alexandrova rounded the desk and smiled when she saw me.

“Killian, what a pleasant surprise. Come take a seat. Can I get you something to drink?”

“Thank you for the offer, Madam Alexandrova, but I must decline. I am here to see Brielle if you don’t mind.” She nodded.
