"Any of them your type?”

“Amy!”

“Sorry, I couldn't help myself. So, what happened next?"

"Well, obviously they can't tell me how to behave in my personal life, but in so many words I was told to get it together. But the profiles are fake, and I don't know what to do. I contacted the sites, and they told me that using someone else's information to create accounts didn't violate their terms of use, so I'm out of luck."

"Well, who do you think would have done this? Students or something?"

"I honestly don't know."

"Hmm. Well, I can't say I'm not happy that someone's trying to find you a mate. You need a little lovin' in your life."

"Don't you start. I have everything I need."

"But no woman in your life."

"I have everything I need. My daughter, my home, my friends and family. I don't need more than that."

"Mmm hmmm. Okay, whatever you say."

"I have to get going," I said not feeling any better. Usually, when things go wrong, I vented to Amy and Pat and moved on. But it wasn’t working now.

"Oh, no. Wait, I wanted to ask you about Molly. You said you had a run-in. Did you guys get along?"

I couldn't contain the laugh. "No, we didn't. She is the polar opposite of everything I value. We mix as well as water and oil. She's a little crazy, if you haven't noticed."

"You should give her a chance. I realize you two have your differences at work but she's really great."

"I'm sure she is. Listen, I'm tired. I'm sure you are too. We'll talk soon and next time you have a crazy person staying in your house, let me know ahead of time?"

"I can't guarantee anything." She laughed. "But I'll do my best. Talk soon, night, Jake."

"Night, Amy."

I set the phone down on the nightstand.

I clicked off the light and laid back on the pillows. I needed to get to sleep. Again, as I closed my eyes, images of Molly came back to me, and I laughed despite myself. It was bold what she'd done. I'd never met a woman with that much confidence.

My ex-wife Natasha was beautiful but insecure. Thoughts of Natasha made my jaw clench and destroyed any and all other thoughts. Natasha and I had been high school sweethearts, together for six years, married for two. We had no business being together that long and if it hadn't been for Hailey we probably never would have married. Hailey was the single greatest thing in my life, from the moment she was born, my heart was hers. But Natasha never took to motherhood.

My eyes drifted closed and into a fitful sleep.

In the morning, I woke at five, went for a run, followed up by a quick lifting session in my basement gym. I stepped out of the shower at 6:30 and once dressed I went to wake Hailey. Several alarm clocks were going off in her room, but none stirred her. This girl slept like the dead.

As was my morning custom, I silenced her alarms and sat on the edge of her bed. The mattress listed with my weight, and she rolled into me.

"Time to get up," I whispered as I shook her gently and brushed the auburn curls from her face.

"No," she groaned, "Dad, I'm so tired."

My eyes fell on the half-opened laptop on her nightstand. "Maybe if you didn't stay up half the night on your computer you would feel more rested."

She yawned and rubbed her eyes, then stretched her arms above her head and nodded.

"How many episodes did you watch?" I asked knowing a new season of one of her favorite shows came out yesterday.

She smiled sheepishly. "I may have finished the whole season."
