I lower my hand. “What is it?”

She paces next to my bed. “If that’s true, then why did you jerk me around before? If you’re…” She hesitates, avoiding the words. “In love with me, then why didn’t you want to have sex?” I open my mouth to answer, but she stops me. “And don’t say it’s because of my brothers and that stupid pact. Ben told me all about it.”

“Because you don’t want me, Dana,” I say, telling the truth. I’ll always tell her the truth. “Not the way I want you.”

She pauses. “That’s not?—”

“You wanted to do it just so you could say you’ve done it.” I shrug. “And I couldn’t be with you like that only to have you walk away after and pretend like it didn’t matter.”

Dana looks down. “What changed your mind?” she asks. “Emerson?”

“Emerson.” I scoff. “Him. Dylan.”

“Dylan?” she asks. “Seriously?”

“Every single fucking guy at Chicago North who dropped to his knees every time you walked by. If it wasn’t me, it would be one of them… and I couldn’t stomach that, either. It had to be me, or…” I swallow. “It had to be me.”

She takes a few quick breaths, allowing my words to sink in. Even I take a moment to listen to what I’m saying, wondering if I should have kept my mouth shut.

In the end, it doesn’t matter.

This was a mistake. It was all a mistake.

“You should go,” I say.

Dana looks up, surprised. “What?”

“I can’t be your first, Dana.” It tears my insides apart, but I force the words out. “You want someone who can show you what to do and let you go, but… I can’t be that for you. I’m sorry.”

I move away from her, coming to sit on the edge of my bed. With my eyes on the floor, I take a breath. It comes out easy. That’s how I know I’m doing the right thing for both of us.

“You should go,” I say again.

Dana doesn’t move at first. When she finally does, I close my eyes. I told her to leave. Doesn’t mean I’m going to watch her go.

Soft hands touch my shoulders, coming to rest on my neck. I look up, my eyes opening to Dana’s sweet smile.

She kisses me, her lips parted and cruelly seductive. When her tongue searches for mine, I can’t stop myself from kissing her back. Hands on her waist, I inhale her scent, my body responding before my brain can kick in.

“What are you doing?” I whisper.

Dana’s smile grows. “You were right.”

“About what?”

“You said I should wait. That I should save myself for someone who cares about me.” She reaches behind her back and pulls the zipper down on her dress. It loosens around her shoulders and she lets it fall to her ankles. I inhale sharply, unable to resist admiring her tight white bra and… lack of panties underneath.

Beta Kappas, amirite?

“It was you,” she whispers. “It was always you, Connor Morgan.”

Dana eases onto my lap, her knees on either side of me, her body heat threatening to tear me apart from the inside out. She kisses me, another seductive stab in my heart. I touch her, my fingertips digging into the smooth skin of her hips as she grips my T-shirt. Hungry eyes look at mine as she pulls it off over my head.

I wince in pain, her fingers grazing the fresh, transparent bandage on my ribs.

Dana pulls back. “Are you okay?” she asks.

“I’m all right,” I say, my voice strained.
