I look at her and raise my eyebrows, asking the question that needs to be answered.

“Oh, don't mind me dear. I'm just talking to myself about Atlis. I don't expect you to chime in just yet. I'm betting he probably figured out by now that he was adopted."

My eyebrows would go even higher if it were possible. Adopted?! How did he not know that? So, that means that Kias wasn’t his brother. I don’t know if I should be relieved or if I should be even more concerned.

“Oh, also… I'm not sure if you knew or not, but JD is your half-sister. Oh, and Kias, I forgot about him. He is–or was–your half-brother. Anyway, back to your father. I found out while we were moving locations that he ran away. Do you have any idea where that man would run off to? He has lived in the same house since he discovered everything when you were a child. It makes me wonder what else he was hiding.”

I’m laying here as still as I can be, trying so hard not to move or make any sounds. This might be the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to do.

This bitch is crazy.

I want to scream and shout it from the rooftops. I don't know what hole she has been hiding in for the last decade, but she has gone absolutely certifiably insane.

As much as I want to start screaming at her, I focus on laying as still as possible, trying not to move or make any sounds. Listening to her as she continues rambling to herself.

"I do hope Atlis will be here soon. I'm growing rather impatient." She stands up and starts pacing back and forth between the two statues guarding me like I'm their most prized possession.

Wonderful. This is going to take forever. I hope Atlis can find me soon.

Chapter 37

Atlis

We pull up to the location as quietly as possible. It’s just a normal house on a normal block. We get out of our vehicles, and my men cover me on both sides as we move in unison into the living room.

Where the fuck is she?

Before I lose my mind completely, Jacob points to a hidden door that looks like a pantry. I grab the handle, open it slowly, and tiptoe down the creaky wooden stairs alone. Both of the guys can stay up there and wait.

“Zolina, where are you? Can you hear me?” Without even thinking of the possible consequences of my actions, I call out into the darkness.

Muffled moans answer me in return, the sounds coming from a distance that seems too far for this little space. I look everywhere for a light switch, but come up empty. Pulling the flashlight from my back pocket, I hit the button, and the light shines out.

Directly in front of me is the woman I found on video kidnapping my wife. Behind her is Zolina, lying on a table with two men on either side of her, guarding and watching me like hawks.

Why is Cece standing in the dark, doing nothing?

As I step off the stairs, my footsteps echo throughout the area, sounding like raindrops on a tin roof.

“I'm coming for you, Snowflake. I’ll get you! Don't worry.” The moment my frantic promises fade away, shrill laughter replaces them, reverberating around the empty space. A familiar icy chill blankets my body as I crack my neck and aim my gun at Zolina's mother's head.

“Atlis. I was wondering when you were going to show up. It's taken you an awful long time to claim what's yours. Or rather, what you think is yours.” She says.

“Hello, Cecilia. I would say it’s nice to meet you face-to-face, but I would be lying. Yes, I'm here. And yes, my men are here as well, but they are upstairs out of the way. So… I'm just going to go ahead and take Zolina now…” I trail off. She seems unstable, and I don’t really know how to approach this yet without Zolina getting hurt in the process.

“Not so fast, young man. Have a seat. We need to talk.”

“No, I'd rather not. Talk quickly. I'm ready to go home,” I tell her.

“Well, I know you have more information about me than what I have already told you. So, let's just test that. Twenty questions? Yes! That’s the right game. Play correctly, and you’ll win a prize.”

I let out a large but quiet sigh. It’s going to be a long fucking night with this bitch.

“Did you know… you were adopted?”

“Yes. Next question.”

“Did you know I wasn’t dead?”
