I shrug. “My natural hair color is dark mahogany.”

“I think you’d look so pretty with darker hair, but you do you, boo.”

I roll my lips and idly wonder what Rock would think.

Does he like my hair as is?

Will he still like me if I dye it and cut some length off?

I chew on my thumbnail as Manny’s eyes meet mine.

“You okay, sugar?”

I nod. “Fine.”

“My friend does spray tanning too. It’s where I get mine done.”

I smile at his honesty. “You put a lot of effort into your appearance,” I tell him. “I like it.”

He flips the pancakes and then turns back to me. “Nice of you to notice.”

He runs a hand through his messily styled locks. He looks like he just stepped off a magazine cover.

“Thanks,” I say. “I mean, for arranging this for me. I will pay.”

He grins. “It’s my pleasure. I told the boss he can’t keep you cooped up in here all day, it’s not healthy.”

In my texts, I wanted to ask Rock what he was doing all night. Jealousy hits me when I think that he could have been back at the clubhouse, with another woman. I mean, he did come, but still, we didn’t actually do it. Maybe he needed more. He was ready to go again when he tucked himself back into his jeans…

“Where did Rock go?” I ask innocently.

He pulls out some plates as I fiddle with my mug. “Cash needed him for a job. It happens from time to time. He wasn’t happy about it.” I look up and meet his taunting eyes. “Seems like you may have made an impression on him in all of five days.”

I roll my lips. Do I deny it? Is there any point?

“I mean, he’s hot,” I whisper. “But that’s it.”

“Uh huh.”

“We didn’t fuck,” I clarify, which is true.

“Woah, honey, it’s not even eight a.m. and it’s dinner and a show. For the record, you don’t have to explain to me, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen Rock whistling while he works.”

My eyes go wide. “I’m sure he’s just…”

He winks at me. “Your secret’s safe with me. Don’t worry.”

He looks over as Stella opens the door from outside and gives me a smile.

“Hi, Laguna Beach.”

I groan. “Not you too.”

She laughs, then thumbs behind her toward the man-made cat enclosure. “Uh, did Rock make that?”

I swallow hard as my eyes meet Manny’s. “Yeah. Just so my cat doesn’t go flying off the roof. Pirate got out on the first day, and I was worried he’d jump up and fall.”

Manny’s lips twitch as I give him shut the hell up eyes.
