I can smell coffee brewing, and I smile to myself.

When I round the corner, I stop and slap a hand over my mouth.

Dad?

Oh. My. God.

Clearly not who I was expecting.

“Dad?” I say, echoing my thoughts. “What are you doing here?”

He turns, smiling as he takes me in. “Princess?” he says, genuinely happy to see me.

We haven’t texted much or talked at all, but that’s normal for us. He only checks in every now and again. “What did you do to your hair?”

Oh, fuck. I can only imagine how I look right now.

“Uh, I colored it.”

He pulls me into a hug. “It looks great, so much better than blonde.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

He keeps his arm around me and says, “Coffee?”

“Yes, please.”

“You never said anything…” I start.

He leaves my side for a moment to make my coffee. Something of a rarity as I’ve never seen my father do any such thing. Ever.

“I texted last night,” he says with a shrug, “to say I was flying in early. You were sound asleep this morning, so I didn’t want to wake you.”

I was too busy fucking, Daddy Dearest.

Where the fuck is Rock?

I frown. Something must be wrong. “Is everything okay?”

He hands me my coffee. “Everything’s fine. But I have some things to ask you.”

I’ve no idea if his sudden switch to serious mode is because he knows something about me and Rock, or if it's to do with me leaving.

My gut tightens.

I don’t want to leave.

Not yet.

Not while me and Rock are just getting acquainted…

“That sounds kinda ominous,” I say, sitting at the island as Pirate, the traitor, rubs himself back and forth on my dad’s legs.

“You need to talk to me about Beth.”

I frown. “Beth?”

“Yes. Your publicist,” he reminds me.
