“I know who she is,” I say. “Why did you fly all this way to talk about her?”

“I didn’t. I flew all this way to check on my daughter and the apartment and to make sure that you’re happy and safe.” Still, he could’ve called to ask me that. Something about my dad’s surprise visit smells fishy.

“I am,” I say. “Rock is doing a very good job.” I don’t know how I manage to keep a straight face.

In fact, Daddy. He fucked me hard last night, in the ass while I screamed his name for everyone to hear…and he spat cum in my mouth…

He eyes me. “You seem…different.”

Uh, oh. Dad is really fucking good at smelling a rat. He didn’t get this far in life from being a pushover. And his nose is always on the ground. Hiding this from him isn’t something that I thought I had to do thousands of miles away.

“It’s the hair, and I got a tan.”

He smiles.

Phew. Dad wouldn’t be smiling if I’d done something wrong, would he?

I wait for whatever he’s flown here to say. “Honey, I’m making sure Beth hasn’t tried to contact you.”

I frown. “No. I mean, she hasn’t got my new number, and I don’t have email access. You took it away, remember?”

He frowns. Oh. This is bad.

“Dad?” I prompt. “What’s going on with Beth?”

He looks back up at me. “Rock found something.”

Rock?

What in the actual fuck? Has Rock been in contact with my dad this entire time?

My heart skips a beat. “What did he find?”

“He traced one of the emails back to a server shared in Burbank, near where Beth’s office is.”

Rock hasn’t mentioned this. He hasn’t said a goddamn word about it.

“And you think Beth has something to do with the threats?”

“We don’t know exactly, but it seems like it could be someone in her office.”

“It isn’t her,” I tell him pointedly. “Beth wouldn’t want to hurt me.”

He gives me a look that tells me that I’m naive. It’s a look that I’ve grown accustomed to over the years. “People do very strange things for money, Aspyn. Just remember that. Unfortunately, no matter how much you pay people, greed can often get in the way.”

I shake my head. Beth is the sweetest, she would never…and what would she have to gain from threatening me? It’s not adding up.

“Dad, you’re scaring me.”

“Which is why you’re here, angel,” he says. “Far away from all of that. I just wanted to make sure that there isn’t anything you’re not telling me.”

It seems I can’t get away from the persistent men in my life. And after I heard Rock whispering to me last night, I can’t get the words out of my head.

I will protect you, Trouble. Nobody is ever gonna hurt you…

The man isn’t supposed to say those things to me.

He’s supposed to be someone to have fun with, nothing serious, not someone who I could easily be falling for. Instead, he’s already worked his way into my heart and now he’s got my head all messed up.
