“Did she tell you this has happened before?”

I frown. No, she didn’t. “Cash mentioned it wasn’t the first time…”

“Aspyn has had some kind of threat toward her ever since middle school. We can blame her financier father for that one. She’s the ultimate daddy’s little girl, make no mistake, but I think there’s good in her. She hasn’t been corrupted by the world yet. She still sees the world and people in it with rose-colored glasses on.”

Yeah, but she’s been corrupted by me…

“Is there a point to all of this? My ears are bleedin’.”

“She doesn’t see things right in front of her, the bad anyway. Her friends. Her manager. Even her family. Aspyn sees no bad in anyone.”

I listen to his words, realizing they’re true.

When I tried to tell her I was bad and no good for her, she didn’t believe it. She didn’t listen. She pursued me.

“I get that,” I say, not wanting to sound too defensive. “But she’s a grown woman, she knows right from wrong.”

“That may be so, but a woman like Aspyn has never lived. She’s never been around an MC, hell, she’s never been around people. The girl is cryin’ out for a big, strong man to take her father’s place, to make sure she doesn’t fall.”

I don’t like him summing her up like that.

“Are you worried about my virtue, brother?” I pat him on the shoulder. “It’s okay. It was gone a long time ago.”

“Nope, and I’m not worried about hers. But once the smoke has cleared, there will be choices.”

“Cryptic.”

“Rock, I think she’s in love with you.”

I stare at him, confused. “What the fuck? I’ve known her for a week.”

He shrugs. “Doesn’t matter. When you blanked out…she was like a mother hen. The way she touched you.” He shakes his head. “She cares for you, and I don’t want you to blow it by actin’ like a fool or treatin’ her like she’s just another sweet butt. Then you’ll lose her for good.”

I point at him. “I would never treat her like that!” I growl. “And like I said, it’s been a week. Nothin’s…” I give up, turning and looking out the window.

“Have you ever felt this way before?” he asks quietly.

I swallow hard. Several seconds pass by before I answer. “No,” I admit. “But it’s just lust. That’s all it is, because I want her so much. She’s fresh meat, right? Isn’t that how the story is supposed to go? She doesn’t mean anythin’…” The lies feel like poison on my tongue. But I can’t divulge to Priest how I feel. Fuck that. The only one who gets my words is Aspyn.

“I think you’re full of shit,” he says, his voice low and dark. “And that you think you don’t deserve it. A lot like your brother felt, before Summer came along.”

I snort. “He was in love with a woman for over two years before he did anythin’ about it.”

“My point exactly.”

I scratch my head. Oh. “It’s not like that with us. We’re just havin’ fun. Foolin’ around. For fuck’s sake, don’t tell Cash. I’m not plannin’ on hurtin’ her. We both know what we’re doin’ here.” Do we?

“If that’s the case, about you just havin’ fun, why did you have a panic attack when you saw me in the apartment and glared at me like I was the devil himself. If looks could kill…” He chuckles.

I turn to him. “You wanna know?” My tone is dark.

He nods. “I wanna know.”

I lean closer. “Because she’s mine.”

His lips twitch. “Does she know that?”

“I doubt it. She’s young. She feels something, I think, but maybe I just have a big dick and that’s all this is.” I don’t like admitting it, but I have to be level-headed about this.
